Good Food Lately

Matt and I have made some great things lately and I wanted to share them with you!

First, this quinoa casserole is so good. It may not be the prettiest food in the world, but we both LOVED it!

We added zucchini and used 2% cheddar (not white cheddar).
I recently made my own homemade gluten free granola. It was so easy! And much less expensive than the fancy gluten free granola brands at Whole Foods.

I used the recipe (linked above) as a guide to make my own granola. I sort of threw it together, but here were my steps:

Mix dry ingredients in a bowl: 3 cups GF Oats, two large handfuls of mixed nuts, a large handful of unsweetened coconut, a couple generous dashes of cinnamon, a dash of ginger, salt.

Heat wet ingredients on the stove top together: 1/3 cup coconut oil, 1/3 cup honey, 1/3 cup agave syrup.

Then mix the wet ingredients into the dry. Spread on a cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil and bake at 325 for 20 minutes. Let cook, and mix in craisins and raisins (amount to your liking).

Very simple! You don't have to be exact with it, just add in what you like :) I like to eat it with plain 0% Fage greek yogurt (no sugar added) and half a banana.

Accidental Chocolate Banana Smoothie
Made from this pin, but the end result will not look like the picture below!
This "recipe" is sort of a funny story. I had pinned this "healthy Wendy's Frosty", and the caption read: "skinny shake that tastes like wendy's frosty ¦ 3/4 cup almond milk, about 15 ice cubes, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1-2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/3 of a banana."

Well, the caption left off a couple key ingredients that were in the recipe when you clicked through, like vanilla protein powder (what makes the shake in the picture above creamy and Wendy's Frosty like).

When I realized what had happened, I threw in the rest of the banana and also a handful of coconut to give it bit more flavor. So the total mix of ingredients used were: 3/4 cup almond milk (I had unsweetened on hand), about 15 ice cubes, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1-2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (I did one heaping spoonful), one banana, handful of unsweetened coconut.

Although the end result was a mistake, it ended up being a really good and really refreshing low calorie/healthy afternoon pick me up.

E-Decorating Design Boards

On Monday I mentioned this fabric scheme was for an e-decorating client:
I used to do a ton of e-decorating but within the last year or so I haven't really done much of it. The blog world has changed, and there are sooo many more decorators/bloggers that offer it now than when I started doing it back in 2006. I also got pretty busy with local clients, so I just wasn't able to do design boards like I used to.

Since I don't do e-decorating design boards as much any more, it was a treat to get to work on these last week. I didn't realize how much I missed doing them!

This is a living room/playroom combo (the pieces coordinate with some of my client's existing furniture, which is why you'll see a sofa, etc missing in the board):
I also designed an entry that coordinates with this space:

If you're interested in working with me through e-decorating, here are my rates: http://brynalexandra.com/services.htm.

Since my clients pay for my design services and sources for their home, I cannot share the sources here on my blog. However, if you are looking for help with your own space, shoot me an email (bryn@brynalexandra.com).

Spotted on True Blood!

Have you guys been watching the new season of True Blood? We have... and I'm sort of on the fence about this season so far...

BUT I was super excited to see one of my Joy & Revelry shop picks featured in Bill's house!
It looks like the prop folks at True Blood used the large size, which is $279. Check it out here!

Workin'

Thought it would be fun to show you what's going on in my work life lately!

The rug ottoman in action. We're finished with this room but I haven't taken portfolio pictures yet.
The guest bedroom of a dear client that I've been working with for a while.. we're almost finished!
These pretty things are going in the space below.
We call this the "mulberry room".
This pretty paper has been backordered, but finally came in! It's slated to be installed this week (it's for this space).
Some fabric selections for an e-decorating client.

Friday Find: Funky Desk

This desk is new at West Elm, and I came across it via Pinterest. It's so sculptural and cool! Perfect for when your work space is out in a main area.

I will always and forever have a love affair with west elm. :)

Happy 30th Matt!!!!

Today I have to take time away from my usual talk of trivial pretty things and talk about the most important person in my life... my amazing husband!!!

Today he turns 30 :) He is seriously the best husband EVER.. he is so kind, supportive, CUTE and could probably take on Bobby Flay and win in a showdown.

Man, he's hot!
I always jokingly call him my manager, because let's be honest, I usually walk around with my head in the clouds. I posted this on Instagram a while back, it really shows how he's always looking out for me..

(On a side note, a friend of mine saw this and said that it would drive her crazy! But I seriously love it. He's always there for me in ways that he knows I need but don't want to admit haha)

I have to take this opportunity to share with you this picture:

JULY 2003
OMG! So funny. Yes, that was almost 10 years ago (crazy!!) And yes, we both had bleached blond hair. Never again....

I'd like to think we keep getting better with age ;)

SEPTEMBER 2012
I love you so much, Matt!! Happy 30th Birthday! I know our 30's will be the best! Love you forever xoxo!

Pamela Munger Original Paintings

I have another talented artist to share with you today! Her name is Pamela Munger and she creates the most beautiful oil and acrylic landscapes. And here is the coolest thing about her and her art - she lives on a rural farm in Colorado where they grow hops for microbreweries, and her inspiration for her paintings is taken from the open land all around her. What a beautiful, simple life!

She does both classic landscape paintings and abstract paintings, and I honestly love both. I've selected 6 of her original paintings for you (and they are really, really affordable! Great pieces to start off an art collection):

Loving Lately

We're finally deep into summer and I'm loving it! I'm currently loving pieces that feel very summery to me :)

1 - Rag & Bone Light Wash Jeans - I've been loving the light wash jean look since seeing this picture on Pinterest.

2 - Lemon Velvet Pillow with Greek Key Trim - These pillows are AMAZING. The yellow is perfection..

3 - This before & after from Chairloom is also perfect.. what an amazing mix of classic (base) and crazy (hot pink).

4 - Cote D'Azur X Bench - I really love these faux crocodile x-benches I recently put into my shop.

5 - Bario Neal Diamond Bracelet - My mom has an old ring that she said we could maybe do something with... and ever since she mentioned that, I've been obsessed with Bario Neal's pieces and have been wanting to use them to make a custom piece.

Friday Find: Adjustable Pewter Sconce

Restoration Hardware Kids is one of my unconventional sources for pretty pieces that are a bit less expensive than the regular Restoration Hardware. And when you hit their sales, you can usually find some great deals!

I love this adjustable wall sconce that is currently on sale:

And it's currently on (final) sale for $99.99! (Note- the finish in the pictures looks gold, but I think it's more of a true silvery pewter color).

Family Room Additions

I've recently changed some things around in our family room and finally took some pictures!

I think the last picture I shared was this one last fall (in the midst of working on my gallery wall):
I had needed some lamps forever (years!) but it took me so long to choose some. But then Furbish came to the rescue!! These lamps are neutral, but bring in a coolness factor that, and I knew they would be perfect:
Glass Jar Lamp with Batik Shade from Furbish
And here are the new pics!

You'll also notice that I switched out the bottom cushions of our sofa.  Here's the story behind that.... after I had purchased our Crate & Barrel Lounge sofa, reviews saying the fabric pills started popping up on the site. Then ours started pilling pretty badly :( I lived with it for a while, but honestly I've always liked the look of a two-tone sofa, so I contacted Crate & Barrel to see if they'd be open to sending us new covers in a different fabric. Their customer service was great, and they sent us new covers (AND cushions!) for no cost.

And the finishing touch was the new lumbar pillow I had made out of some fabric I had on hand.

This room is pretty much finished (for now). I can't share the entire space with you yet, I have to wait for our magazine feature with HGTV Magazine to come out (ah!)

Uncommon Goods

This post is brought to you by Uncommon Goods.

Have you guys seen the website Uncommon Goods before? It's a really cool site full of, you guessed it, uncommon goods! But seriously, they have so many great options for unique gifts (like when you need to get something for someone and you have NO idea what to get!).

Here are some of my favorite things on the site, that I wouldn't mind getting myself ;)
1 - Recycled Wine Glasses - These would be perfect for a casual summer evening out on the patio filled with some Prosecco!

2 - Agate Coasters - I have two sets of agate coasters in my house and I love them. It's nice to have necessary things that look really good when left out!

3 - Striped Crochet Pillow - I've never seen anything like this pillow before. It's feminine but casual at the same time.. I love it!

4 - Kantha Throw - Although it may be trendy, I still love a good Kantha throw. I have two in my house (one in my guest room and one in my family room). I love how they are all so unique.

5 - Acai Seed Color Blocking Necklace - Okay, I'm really obsessed with this necklace. It's simple and delicate but has great color too... I would wear it all summer long! And it's really long, so you can double it and it would still hang pretty low. I would layer it with a delicate gold necklace.

Uncommon Goods also has some great Father's Day gifts! They have a great round up, you can check that out here.

When they contacted me and offered to send me a product to review, I knew there was something that I really needed. You guys are going to laugh... crazy cat person alert!

Henry hangs out downstairs at night, and I've been wanting a night light for him. (haha!! Told you! Crazy cat lady...) But seriously, this night light is so pretty, I actually like seeing it during the day when it's off.
Check out Uncommon Goods, you'll definitely find some really cool things!

Random Monday Morning Thoughts

This new home tour via Apartment Therapy is GORGEOUS! I'm always such a sucker for home tours...

I was looking for a pair of the perfect summer wedges that could be dressed up or dressed down, and I found them!
Dr. Scholl's Milestone Wedges
Comfort is KEY for me since I'm typically on my feet (and often carrying heavy things!) all day long.

I am still searching for the perfect black pant. I'd love something that's a bit dressier than black denim but not too dressy. I tried on the Cafe pant and Minnie pant at J.Crew but they looked pretty terrible.

Just like these....

I'm not opposed to them being denim, but in my experience black denim always fades and then looks a little "blah" after a while.

Any perfect black pant suggestions??

Also, we made this bruschetta grilled chicken last night and it was AMAZING! So fresh and light, the perfect summer meal.

Morning River

Most of the pieces I selected for my Lauren Adams Pop Up Shop are small scale works, but I did select one large canvas for the event. I LOVE it, I wish I could have it for my own home!

I thought it would be fun to decorate a room around this piece.. here is what I came up with:

Painting // Sofa // Chandelier // Accent Table // Wall Color // Leopard Pillow // Striped Pillow (Ryan Studio) // Accent Chair

I think this painting would look amazing against a dark blue/green wall, and Hague Blue is one of the best colors out there. Then mix in a funky mix of furniture and accessories, and it would make for a gorgeous living room!!

Lauren Adams Pop Up Shop on Joy & Revelry

I am so excited to share with you this pop up shop I curated for Joy & Revelry!

I've been a huge fan of Lauren Adams for a couple years now. Last year, I purchased one of her small 4x6 abstracts for my own gallery wall and it's one of my favorite pieces.

My Lauren Adams 4x6 abstract, currently hanging in my family room.
One major reason I love having a shop with Joy & Revelry is getting the chance to support my favorite artists and also getting to pick my favorite pieces to share with you!

I love Lauren's pieces because they are so delicate and simple, but they still have so much movement and (depending on the piece) color. I have never seen anything like them!

I want to share with you how Lauren Adams describes her art:

My work is inspired by my home; by the lush hills and glittering rivers that drew my ancestors from their own mountainous regions  of remote lands to settle in this place, their new home, now my home - West Virginia.

I revel in the act of painting; utilizing a combination of thin veils of color and thick oil paint to create a dialogue between intuitive painting and my background in working en plein aire. The feeling of place that is established through texture, color and rhythm is essential to that dialogue. Simplicity is pursued as I break down the landscape to its purest form, portraying its true essence.

I selected 15 of my very favorite pieces from Lauren for my Joy & Revelry pop up shop. Here are a couple of them:
#267 - $65
#225 - $75
#413 - $40
Neutral Landscapes (Set of 2) - $60
Black & White - $65

These pieces are originals only, there aren't any prints in the pop up shop. In fact, Lauren doesn't make prints of any of her pieces, which I think is really cool. They are best viewed as originals, so you can see the multiple layers of paint and the detail she puts into them.

Check out the rest of the shop here! I hope you enjoy it!
