This post is totally silly and random.

This morning I'm going through my normal blog roll, and saw Haven & Home posted about L.L. Bean's new winter stuff (which is totally cute btw)! I clicked on the link because my grandmother gave me an L.L. Bean gift card probably 6 years ago before the company re-invented itself... I wonder if it's still good?

Anyway, I came upon this picture and my heart skipped a beat.

Is that.. wait.. let me google. She looks so familiar!

YES I knew I recognized this from somewhere!!

Kirsten from American Girl!

(I mean no disrespect to L.L. Bean... it is a cute dress and they have some great stuff in their new Signature line!!)

Were any of you an American Girl doll fan? I was obsessed - I read the books over and over. But I never did get a doll - I hated my parents for it back then, but now I get it. They were very pricey and I was a little too old for dolls (9 or 10).

Samantha was my favorite, btw.

  2. I had Samantha and was mildly obsessed with her. She came on family vacations, to the movies, to dinner.....it's no wonder I didn't have any dates until late high school!

  3. i just laughed so hard!! I had Kirtsten and Felicity too! I actually still have them(attic)and will pass them on to my daughters I think. Great post! I LOVED these dolls, and there are copious amounts of girls with their moms that come to Chicago for the Macy's-sized American Girl Place and spend copious amounts of money on everything to do with them. Thanks for bringing back good mems :)

  4. I had Molly, because she was a gift from my grandmother who grew up in the era of Molly. I always wanted Samantha though... her clothes and accessories were the best!

LL Bean missed the mark with this Little House on the Prairie dress, but I am loving the Tie Neck Dress and the Cord Skirt!

  5. HAHAHA!!!! She's a dead ringer for Kirsten!

I have Samantha and played with her every single day. I thought she was made for me because of the dark, thick hair and big dark eyes. I was always so bummed when my parents would buy every little accesory that went with her.

I have Addy, too. And a smaller version of Kirsten (remember when they came out with those?).

    Thanks for the laugh!

  6. I was obsessed! I speed read through all the books at the library for every single one of the original girls. Then when Felicity came out I had to get her. Saved all my few pennies for almost a year to buy her for myself :)

  7. Samantha was always my fave too. But I never got her. My parents did buy me the American Girl Doll deigned to look like you. Still have her boxed up in the basement!

  8. Too funny! You are so right. I was soooo obsessed with American Girl when I was little. I read all the books and had Felicity. She never left the rocking chair in my room because I never wanted to get her dirty or mess up her hair. I still have her packed at my parents house.

  9. I still have my Samantha doll. It's packed away in case I ever have a little girl of my own. I adored her!

But I love the new LLB Signature line. I bought one of their trench coats - fantastic!

  10. I had that doll! Oh, how I miss those days of getting lost in American Girl books. Thank you for this post. It's nice to be reminded of childhood.

  11. Hah! Too funny! My parents refused to buy me the dolls as well. They were probably right about me being too old also. But my heart belonged to the colonial sprite that was Felicity :)

  12. I also was obsessed and am a bit sad that the company was sold and is now so huge and commercial. I remember back in the day when it was just the good ol' catalog and what not, now it is so above and beyond. Anywho, I had Felicity and all the books for all the girls at the time and still have all of that stuff in storage. Let's hope I have a girl, or I'm in trouble :)

  13. LOL-hilareous- and a good call. I loved my american girl dolls- I had Molly- and then I saved my money and purchased Felicity on my own. I cant wait until my daughters old enough to play with them!

  14. I was completely obsessed with Molly. I had to play with the catalog (yes seriously the catalog was like a giant paper doll) for two years before my parents finally gave in and bought her for me...meanies!! I played with her all the time and ended up getting Felicity, Kirsten, and Addy as well!! I loved my American Girls...still do and in fact they are sweetly packed away up in my attic waiting for my future daughter to love as much as I did!! Can't wait to pass them on, but with my luck...I'll have a boy!

  15. hahaha...too funny. YES definitely...I had Samantha. I LOVED her and wanted to be her. I haven't thought about her in years! I know she's in my parents attic...I'll have to get her down one of these days, maybe when I have a daughter.

  16. I had wanted Molly so bad but the year my parents finally caved was when the "just like me" dolls came out so I ordered one with red hair and blue eyes and named her Claire. I had a platform bunkbed with only one mattress (on the bottom bunk) and the upper bunk became Claire's apartment. My dad made her a bed and table and I loved cutting out pictures from magazines for her "posters". I was probably too old for dolls too (8?) but I loved the independent lifestyle I invented for her :)

  17. hahahaha!!! That is hysterical! Love that you realized where you had seen that. I had one of the dolls, Felicity. I was from a family of 5 girls and 1 boy though. So we were definitely into the dolls. As are my 8 nieces!

  18. Oh the shame.. I think I was still playing with my Molly doll until I was ohhhh (small voice) thirteen. I loved my dolls so much! It's really interesting how much Mattel has changed the company..a lot less focus on the educational history stuff, unfortunately.

  19. That's too funny!

I actually bought my daughter one for Christmas when I was in NYC for the Nate Show. That thing was so dang expensive, I probably won't even let her play with it (J/K...kinda)!

  20. OMG I loved that series and still have the books somewhere at my parent's house. I used to get the catalogs and just stare at them for hours. I never got a doll though..$$. Samantha was my favorite as well.

  21. Aw! I had no idea about what American Girl was about until my aunt bought one for me and my cousin. I had Samantha! I remember I liked dressing her up and fixing her hair :)

I looked on their site, I dont think they sell her anymore! =\

  22. oh my gosh, I HAVE THAT DRESS!! You could order the dress to match your doll exactly, I even contemplated wearing it for Halloween this year. HAHA!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ah! My parents wouldn't buy me one either. I wanted Felicity so badly I could hardly stand it. Mostly b/c I just wanted red hair. :)

  24. Haha, love the post. The silly and random title drew me in.

WOW, yes, that looks like it belongs in one of the American Girl Doll catalogs. I had a doll that was made to look like me. I read all the books too and my doll came with a "write your own book" thing. Being the dork I was, I came up with a pretty good story. She was adopted and her name was Audrey. I should've tried for a book deal. Hmm...

  25. hilarious. That would be a great adult halloween costume, doll in tow of course.

  26. I too read the books and never got the doll! My mom got me the magazine instead :( Oh well. Now my mom and MIL are both buying my daughter a doll. Too funny that the dress reminded you of her.

    PS Love your blog!

  27. Samantha was my fav too! I never had the dolls but I had the first four books and I read them a lot too. I actually just told my parents to go into the attic and try to locate them so I could have them for a nursery. (still think its a girl :))

  28. The last time I was in NYC... the group I was with kept calling me Samantha (because of the doll). Funny stuff.

    I had Molly growing up....

  29. So funny! I was in the same boat! I wanted Samantha, but I was kind of too old for dolls too. Plus, they were really expensive. Thanks for taking me down Memory Lane! ~City Belle

  30. Oh my! I just LOVED all the American Girl series! I was obsessed with Felicity (because of the red hair) and I even convinced my parents to go to the Colonial Williamsburg Felicity tour one summer! Good times, good times!

  31. I was obsessed with Felicity as a kid! I never got the doll, but I do have the book set. My daughter, who is almost 2, is totally into dolls. My friend's daughters were getting rid of their American Girl dolls...they have like 5...and gave my daughter one...she just loves it and can't put it down! We ended up with a bunch of different books and some clothes. My dad's friend bought a doll for each of her daughters, they never touched them, so she is giving them away! She is going to be giving us the Samantha doll, along with her book collection and a bunch of clothes! Such luck...I am thinking about saving it to give to her at Christmas!

Did you hear they retired Kirsten?! And they are retiring Felicity at the end of the year as well! My mom asked if I wanted a Felicity doll for Christmas...even still I am not sure I can justify her paying almost $100 for a doll that won't get played with!

  32. being a bit of a spoiled youngest child i had all the main dolls (and one i designed myself who was asian to round out my diversity quota). american girl dolls are definitely part of the reason that i became a history major in college :)

not to mention that last year my group of girlfriends dressed up as American Girl dolls for a sorority event... it was a pretty big hit (not that any of the frat boys understood it.)

  33. I loved American GIrls... one of my fondest memories was going to Felicity's Tea Party in Williamsburg when they unveiled the new doll. I had Samantha and adored her and her books... now I can't believe how many dolls there are!! This post literally made my laugh out loud!

  34. Love this, and the responses make me laught and cry! I am the mother of a 28 year old, who not only owned Samantha, she bought Felicity and Kirsten with her "own" money. Years later, my husband sold them at a garage sale for $5 each.

  35. Samantha all the way! My neighbor had Molly and though I liked her wardrobe trunk I couldn't forgive her for not choosing my beloved Samantha.

An American Girl doll and a trampoline are the only two things I can think of that I asked for and never got from my parents. I would get the catalog and be busy for hours.

  36. Good eye! The model bears a striking resemblance to Kirsten and that dress isn't helping.

I love how many people have the Felicity doll! She's my favorite too (probably because we share a name); I would have been in elementary school when she came out and I remember feeling so special. I also remember informing people that I had my name first, just in case they were confused by that. Elementary school logic, what can I say. They were $$, so I remember my mom sewing new outfits for her instead of buying them. We took a quilting class together too so that we could make a blanket for her. I'm going to have to call my mom and thank her for the memories!

  37. Hilarious! I actually had Samantha. I know you are thinking I'm way too old, but American Girls were first launched when I was 12. And yes, I was too old to really play with dolls, but I just loved her!

  38. my favorite was Samantha too! Funny thing was that I had 2 sisters and we all loved them, but my parents didn't have the money when we were little to get the dolls for us....so we cut out the pictures in the magazines and had them taped to our walls for a while. Creative? or crazy?

  39. YES! I loved them too! And my parents made me save up for my own doll- I think back then (13 years or so)they were $80! lol they're probably well over a hundred now!

  40. Loved American Girl Dolls! I had Kirsten - she was my big Christmas present one year. I read every single one of those books - too funny.
