I'm Loving Brick Floors

I really, really love brick floors. I remember they first caught my eye in a home Sally Wheat designed:

They are so cozy and pretty and unique! I would love to put brick floors down in our kitchen (which is desperately calling for new floors... we have yucky old vinyl in there now). But when it comes to this house, I'm always thinking about resell. I know they look good to me, but I feel like the majority of people would walk in and think WTF?

So I will continue to admire from afar, aka Pinterest....

  1. I have a linoleum brick floor, talk about yuck! I do love the look of brick floors indoors...I will say I was in an extremely nice house in a great part of town that had a brick floor in the kitchen and I didn't love walking on it...I did have heels on which might make a difference in feel, I like you will admire them from afar

  2. It's very prettty but I think it would be really hard and cold. We have wood floors in our kitchen in this house and it's so much warmer and not nearly as hard as the tile in our previous kitchen. So much more comforable than before.

  3. Love them on a porch, kitchen or den with a big cozy rug!

  4. I especially love them in a herringbone pattern like this http://pinterest.com/pin/203647214371928816/
I agree that it's probably not a great choice for resale, unless you live in a french chateau. Maybe in your someday forever house?

  5. i love the look as well and I think they can work well in warmer climate homes! I've seen it both here in the US (far south) and overseas and really love it...a very casual, cozy vibe which is my favorite.

Gah! Loving every one of those pictures! On a side note - I wonder how difficult it would be to install brick floors. You would probably need a decent amount of clearance, and you might lose a bit of height in the room. I wonder if it would be difficult to add to an existing home...

  8. My grandmother had brick floors in her kitchen, and I loved the look of them when I'd visit growing up. They are a bit harder to maintain since they may not be totally flat (think: more challenging to sweep/vacuum or pick up spilled food). They ARE beautiful though!!

  9. I do love the look of those pictures! I would be a little worried about upkeep, comfort, etc. though. That's why I love Pinterest - fantasy world!!

When I saw the title of this post, I thought, "Nuh-uh! Cold and dirty and uneven!" But I actually LOVE some of these photos--particularly the dining table with clear plastic chairs. Such an unexpected combination of old-world and ultra modern. Just add a plush shaggy rug (sheepskin perhaps??) for cozier areas like the living room! ...And a good vacuum to keep all those crevices clean. ;)

  11. I absolutely LOVE brick floors and was also thinking about doing them in my kitchen but I can hear my MIL in my ear saying "that is going to be brutal on your legs- when you cook and do dishes, etc" so I haven't pulled the plug yet...would love to hear from someone that lives with them!

I have an older home and the floor is made of full solid brick (not half bricks or brick tiles) all the way down to the foundation. Although they are beautiful in your photos, I absolutely loathe mine. They are dirty, uneven, and freezing cold in the winter (and I live in Texas!). I inherited them, but certainly wouldn't recommend them. I think they are one of those design aesthetics that look great in your head, but are probably impractical for most. I do love the juxtaposition of the ghost chairs with the rustic wood and floors, though :)

  13. I wonder if there is some cool workaround (like a tile or floor paint) so that you can get the look but still make it temporary and not cold, dirty, uneven...

  14. I LOVE brick floors and have since my neighbors contemporary ranch had them in the 70's..I was in high school and fell in love then with their floors. I would love to use them in our sunroom. I think they're timeless.

  15. I too love brick floors in a home. I think it was a Southern Living Idea House from many years back that turned me on to them. That home had brick in the entry, and it seemed so warm and welcoming. I say go for it!

  16. We had them in a former house and I loved them...you would be surprised how hard they are to keep clean.
