office commitment

Work has really picked up quite a bit and I'm now completely committed to getting my office put together. I need my workspace to be as functional (and pretty) as possible, and stat!

If you remember, this is what it currently looks like:

photo

When we originally painted the office, we ran out of paint and it's in desperate need of a second coat. Since I've been using this office for about a year, I decided I need to go lighter on the walls. As you can see, it gets very little light and even the pink feels a bit too dark.

I'm going to stick with pink (because it makes me happy), but go with something lighter and more subtle.

Maybe Benjamin Moore's Opal...

As much as I love my vintage green desk, the opening for the chair is too small and it's pretty frustrating. I end up constantly hitting my chair up against it... this is the result:

It would work great with a regular chair - if anyone local to Charlotte is interested I'll sell it to you for CHEAP! All it needs is a new paint job, it has a really great shape.

I am going to get this IKEA dining table to use as a desk (ahh, lots of open space underneath and lots of desk space).

One thing I've really needed is organized and easily accessible storage. I worked on that this weekend.

The SKUBB closet organizers from IKEA are really great for memo storage:

I need to get one more small one and a couple larger ones to hold fabric I have laying around. This will free up storage in my campaign dresser.

The Container Store is currently having a sale on office supplies, so I picked up a few things I've been wanting for a while.

Acrylic hanging file holder with white hanging files and black file folders.

Acrylic sorter with zippered job jackets (I've found this works the best for me for organizing client stuff). As you can see I've only moved over one client to the new jackets so far...

Making progress, hopefully I can get this done soon!!

  3. You'll love the size of the IKEA table. It's way too small to be a dining table (I've used it as one for the last 2 years, let's not talk about it), but it's the perfect size for a desk. That zippered pouch idea is genius!

  5. I have been obsessed with my office lately too. I actually posted about the same table for my desk today on my blog too. I'm going to have to put my extra closet organizers in my office closet for sure. Great idea for paperwork and fabric. I cannot wait to see yours completed.

  6. I store my fabric the same way! Works great for sheets and towels, too. (We have a large coat closet, but no linen closet). I bet if you bought the same paint color but had it mixed at 50% it would be lighter and you'd only need one coat ...

  7. I need to get my work space in order too...I was thinking of painting the walls white since it's in the basement, but now I'm going to consider a pale pink! Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. Really like the opal.  Looks very similar to the color in my guestroom (BM pink damask) I bet that new desk will make the room feel more open since it is so light.

  15. The supplies that you use seem to work great and keep everything so organized. I've gotta get my files organized and get a system down for filing too. We have an IKEA right down the street from us which is so great for quick trips.

  16. Hi Bryn! I was wondering which size Table you were going to get from IKEA. I've seen other examples of this dining table used and I can't decide which size is best! Thanks for your help!!

  18. So, this might sounds silly, but I love the idea of tables as desks, but in execution I feel like I'm so vulnerable when people/clients walk in... they can see everything! haha.  On another note, I would love to do this, I just have to come up with interesting file storage for legal files.  Any thoughts?

  20. I have that ikea dining table and the clear acrylic file holder too! I use the table as a pillow making / package shipping workspace, and as for the clear acrylic file holder I have one with turquoise files, one with black and one with cream colored files. They're great aren't they? Love your idea of using the SKUBB closet organizers for fabric samples.  I might have to try that!

  23. First of all, I wish I did not have to share my office with the laundry room. Looking at the washer and dryer make me feel guilty:)
Second....I use those same zippered thingys for my clients. They are great!

I love how your office is coming together!  I think that dining tables work great as desks...especially when you are constantly laying fabric samples, paint chips and pillows out to look at!  Correct me if I'm wrong but is that a cute little dog booty peeking out from behind your desk in the shot from your door....love it!  ;)
