Making The Most of What You Have

Do you guys read Jess Contstable's blog Makeunder My Life? She's a jewelry designer and writes a great blog about living life with intention. I started reading it years ago and can really connect with it.

Jess asked me to be a part of a new series about living with intention. There are different categories.. finance, health, etc. I was chosen to be the "home" category. I jumped on the opportunity because it's a subject I'm passionate about.

Today I wrote about making the most with what you have. This is something I do daily whether it be with my own home or my clients' homes. I think it's a subject that rings true especially in this economy that is not getting any better.

One example of "making the most of what you have" is how I had to use our old sleigh bed that is not my style anymore. But truth is we simply didn't have the budget to get a new one. And you know what? It's okay.. I still love our bedroom and someday we will get a new bed. But not now.

  1. I am going over to read it but wonder if you wouldn't mind sharing what that gorgeous fabric is on your skirted nightstand?  So great how you are living what you preach!

  3. Wonderful post, Bryn.  You are so right about all of it -- and it is easy to get caught up in wanting the new / current thing.  I have plenty of old furniture that isn't my style any more, too ... but yep, it's staying!  Because, while our homes are very important, sometimes other priorities (preschool!!) mean you should work with what you have!

  5. I love this post.  I think it is important to have a home that you love but it can be tough on a budget.  Thanks for sharing how you (in the words of Tim Gunn) "make it work" in your bedroom!

  6. I completely understand the feeling of living with and loving your current stuff! After all, it is just stuff in the end! Love your bedroom, so relaxing!

  7. Bryn - such a great job!  Your room looks great and I love the new addition of the reading lamps above the bed.  So chic.

ok - so i need your help.  i think you'll def. understand this search I'm on and may be able to help.  Have you seen a worn, distressed, beaten up leather chair I could use for my new office ANYWHERE in your travels?  See blog post here:   http://realhousewivesofpwcounty.blogspot.com/2011/08/rando-ramblings.html

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

  8. Thank you so much, Bryn, for being such a fantastic inspiration to us all! I adore how well you've taken your perfect pieces and then translated them into things that work for you at this time in life. I'm so happy to share your intentional design on MML!

  10. Your room looks great!  I have had a love, hate relationship with my bedroom furniture.  I have owned it for about 10 years.  After five, it wasn't my style any more.  And I really wanted something less ornate.  But now, I am in love with it again.  Go figure.

  11. I think we all have furniture in our homes we'd like to get rid of, but unfortunately it would cost a fortune to replace everything.  Somehow, we just make it work!

  12. The bedroom looks fabulous! I just discovered your blog and love it. We too have a sleigh bed in a dark cherry finish that I'm just not a fan of anymore, but buying a new bed isn't going to happen anytime soon. You made it work and the whole room still looks fresh!

  13. Hi Bryn!  I absolutely adore your new bedroom!  Can you tell me the color of your dresser?  I have a very similar dresser that I would love to paint and that color is just perfect!   Thanks in advance.  Liz

  14. SO AGREE! I just posted this week about the same dillema with our guest room and you know what? I LOVE how it turned out using what we had and not spending any money for now. Itt feels more me/us anyway using personal items that we already had and loved instead of new, trendy things that maybe aren't so me. Does that make sense? Hahahaha. Anyway- Congrats to us that keep it real!

  16. Your bedroom looks fantastic. I like the concept of making do. Just recovered my early-90s sofa. It's not my style anymore but when you surround it with things that are - it's OK.

  17. I read this post and new I had to comment. I believe I have the exact sleigh bed and set (if not close to it) and feel the same way about them.. and also can't afford to buy a new bed. Your update looks great and gives me hope that I can work that sleigh bed into my new style.. Thanks!

  18. Bryn...you are singing my song with this post.  Not everything has to be perfect in a room, and I agree, sometimes when you work with it it will make you try harder and it can turn out for the best sometimes.  I think your bedroom looks fabulous and the dark wood of the bed is good in my opinion.
