I gathered even more images of the beloved Saarinen Tulip table.. too bad we can't afford the real thing.
I really appreciate everyone's advice about how dirty the IKEA base can get. I think a couple coats of a clear glossy or semi gloss spray paint should do the trick.
In other news, the unpacking is coming along slowly but surely. I already have a few of my favorite things out...
But speaking of unpacking, I should be getting off the computer and back to work. Have a great weekend!
I'm with you on the tulip table... I LOVE the look and you can change out the chairs to keep the look updated. The table itself will always be classic. Buy the IKEA one now and save up for the real thing (fake it 'til you make it, that's what I always say!).

I was going with a similar look in my kitchen, with a built in bench around the ikea table. then i actually WENT to ikea to get it and i was seriously diappointed with the look of it in person. not only was the base filty, which can be fixed, but the whole thing just had an overly cheap plastic feel to it. i was crushed and am now back to the drawing board- but make sure you touch and feel it before you commit to it! good luck.

I would love the Saarinen original, but I found the Ikea one on Craigslist and snapped one up. A magic eraser will be your friend with keeping the base clean. Mine's a few years old and a bit dingy. I would love to freshen up the whole thing, so I'm eager to read about what paint you'd recommend for fixing up the top and the base.

ReplyDeleteI love these too. I always try to think of spots it could fit in., but alas we are maxed out.
ReplyDeleteThe Florence or the Planet tables by Calligaris could also be good options instead of the Tulip Table (which is on my wish list too!) if you want something more durable than Ikea but not as expensive as the real thing (depending on the comination of top and base, of course). The Florence has a little variation on the base, which makes it unique.
