I still don't know why they got rid of them but I did stumble upon a really great alternative. Bemz.com has custom IKEA slipcovers that you can buy and they are really great!!
Example - This Karlstad chair has nice lines but ugly legs.
But add a white linen blend skirted slipcover and it is much prettier!
(sorry I couldn't get a picture without the text on it)
The chair from IKEA is $249 and the linen blend slipcover is $189. Less than $450 for an armchair - a deal!
Before - a boring IKEA sofa:
After - A rich, Belgian Linen sofa:
Sofa is $399 and linen slipcover is $379 equaling around $780 or a sofa. Wow.
I am filing this baby away for future reference.
The slipcover makes such a huge difference and impact on that sofa! whoa
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this! I can use a new cover on my Stylosand sofa from Ikea and they have ugly selections for covers. I was beginning to think I was going to have to custom order it. I'm swooning over this! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteOr you could just pay $780 for a quality sofa. Do your design clients really want IKEA furniture?
ReplyDeleteI've been debating a Bemz for my ektorp sofa for so long now. I just can't pull the trigger. The shipping is soooo expensive. And the slip is $600+, uggh. I know for sure that if I didn't already have the couch, which I do love (and it would last me years longer if I buy the bemz), I wouldn't buy one and then the bemz...I could have a much better sofa for $1000. Right?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually interesting because there is really not a great market out there for a sofa under $1,000 but better than IKEA. I searched and searched and searched for one of my clients but came up short. We ended up increasing her sofa budget but I really think this is a good alternative for those who can't a thousand dollars on a sofa.
ReplyDeleteBummer! IKEA has been getting rid of or changing some of my favorite products lately. (The LACK bookshelf is MIA and the shape of their Henriksdal chair.) I have the Kartslad chairs with the IKEA long slipcover. I bought them with the idea that I could buy another if one was ruined beyond repair. Apparently not! If push came to shove, I would just buy the more expensive cover, but I wish they wouldn't get rid of their more sophisticated products. Thanks for the new source for the covers!
ReplyDeleteWow! Thanks for sharing. I love that slipcover! Makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteWow, I love the chair! It's amazing how something so simple, as hiding the chair's legs, makes such a substantial impact. The slipcover changed the proportions, to my liking. It is so modern, so white, I love it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am not your client, but I appreciate this post because as a young adult, and an aesthetics enthusiast, this beautiful chair is accessible and ideal for me.
Watch out for brokerage and custom fees. Still can be cheap when it comes to slipcovers, but the sticker price doesn't tell the whole story!
ReplyDeleteSpoken like someone who doesn't really know much about Ikea or how much it is appreciated in the design world. It's not bad quality. And not everyone wants to blow 4k on a stupid couch.
ReplyDeleteShipping to the US is only $20. It's the brokerage and customs (taxes) that get you.
ReplyDeleteSo good to know! I especially like the couch.
