What do you guys think of Spray Painting furniture? I've never done it before. Wait, I take that back. I have done it, but the furniture was wicker. But what do you think of spray painting wood furniture?
Jenny spray painted this gorgeous piece:
I googled "spray painting furniture" and came across this great, short-and-to-the-point video from Rustoleum:
It demonstrates the best way to do spray paint strokes.
I have two pieces I think I will spray paint. One being my silver entry way piece:
And another being an old vintage dresser for the guest room. I'll of course let you know how it goes!!
On a semi-related note, my (super handy and awesome) mother in law is coming into town next week and is going to help me with stuff for the house. I have a long laundry list of things for us to do while she is here. I'm excited to make some progress on the house again! Some things on my two do list are..
+ paint master bedroom
+ make bedside tables (this one will be an interesting project)
+ hang new porch lights
+ finish office

I say go for it!!! In the last few months we have spray painted and painted all kinds of furniture in an effort to transform our repurposed and thrifted items. One of our favorite projects is this...

Good luck, happy painting, and I love your blog!
I say go for it. I've done it...it works pretty well. My only issue has been getting even coverage.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to do this myself on a dresser for my husband's bedside table. My sister thought I was crazy for saying I was going to spray it. Jenny was my inspiration though. She always seems to get beautiful results. Can't wait to see how your projects turn out!
ReplyDeleteI actually just spray painted one of my dining room chairs, which is wood, after many problems with getting regular paint to cover properly. My chair looks gorgeous and has a flawless finish. Plus, it was so much easier than painting it with a paint brush. Some colors, particularly reds, just do not cover in a high gloss or semigloss paint no matter how many coats you put on. I so wish I hadn't learned that the hard way!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all your house projects!
I was researching this very subject just last week. I did find somewhere on the internet, someone had said that they could not get rid of the fumes from the spray paint. They said they would spray paint smaller pieces but not big ones.
ReplyDeleteHave you looked at http://www.inthefunlane.com/ ??
Holly has a paint gun which she uses to spray regular latex paint. Her pieces are amazing. If you're especially adventurous, it may be something worth investing into. (She makes a living renovating and selling flea market furniture!)
I've done it with small pieces like a nightstand and it worked great and over two years later, there's not a single scratch on it. The down side is it would be expensive to cover a larger item (I used a full can for a tiny nightstand). If you go for it, my biggest advice would be to get a trigger attachment (sold alongside the spray paint)--my finger was numb by the time I finished and my forearm sore the following day.
ReplyDeleteI spray painted my desk using rustoleum paint & it turned out wonderful! Good luck! =)
ReplyDeleteSpraying is so much easier than hand painting. Its not as durable but you can combat that by sealing it. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteGirl, yes! You know I'm not a DIY'er but I can't imagine doing it with a roller. The spray paint gives you a great, even finish. On a related note, I had a wood chair professionally refinished in high gloss red, and she sprayed it. I think the big downside is that -- I'm guessing anyway -- it turns out to be a lot more expensive ... because boy, can you go through the spray paint quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't like about spray painting furniture is the fact that my finger starts to hurt after a long time of spraying. I have only done small things - mirrors, candlesticks, so I don't know how it would be doing a large piece of furniture. I love that dresser of Jenny's though!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with spraypaint lately and have been painting everything in my house thats not tied down. I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteOh, and dont forget to pick up one of those little snap on trigger things they have, its a lifesaver for your pointer finger :)
I'm sure you are aware but I was surprised to learn how the humidity of NC can affect a spray paint project. I got some weird bubbling when I spray-painted a lamp on a super hot, humid day!
ReplyDeletei am spraypaint happy sometimes- good tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI've done it and I will do it again (especially on pieces of furniture with hard-to-reach-by-brush areas)
ReplyDeleteI just started spray painting some chairs I bought off CL and so far so good!!
ReplyDeleteAlso have big plans for a desk of mine. Will watch for your progress :0)
We recently spray painted a vintage nightstand we got for $20 for my daughter's room...bright yellow! After stripping the old varnish, it took about 6 coats to cover the original dark mahogany. I love it!
ReplyDeletei've spray painted many a pieces of furniture and never had a problem and love them all.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fantastic MIL! Will feel so good to get those things crossed off your list. Love the grey chest the way it is but certainly understand the need to paint!
ReplyDeleteI spray paint wood furniture all the time! It's a breeze. Normally you don't even need to sand/prime.
ReplyDeleteOnly problem for me is that times it may spider a bit when you apply too many layers of spray.
I love using my paint compressor. It's amazing. Nice smooth coverage and it dries in about 15 mins! Love it!
Definitely go for it!! I can't wait to see the results you end up with. Isn't spraypainting the best? Oh, and love the video you posted, too.
ReplyDeleteI want to try this but am very intimidated!!
