The Nursery Diaries: Chapter 1

Many years ago (in 2010 to be exact), I loved a little series on one of my favorite blogs called The Nursery Diaries. It was written by Erika Powell as she decorated her nursery for her first daughter. She no longer blogs, and now has a second daughter, but I still adore the series three years later and have been going back and reading her old posts as I decorate my own nursery.

So I thought it would be fun to do my own "Nursery Diaries" (although it won't be nearly as great as her original!) Even though I wasn't pregnant at the time, I loved reading how her design unfolded and the thoughts behind the space.

As I mentioned in my previous post, we found out a couple weeks ago we were having a boy! And I was so thrilled. I was always hoping for a son.. there isn't really a concrete reason as to why, but I just always pictured my life with a son in it.

We closed our eyes during the gender parts of the anatomy ultrasound, and had the nurse write down what the gender was. Then we took the envelope to a bakery next door and they filled two cupcakes with blue or pink. Later that evening, Matt and I opened the cupcakes together... it was such a great experience! We video taped it and will charish that moment forever.
Once I found out we are having a son, the wheels immediately started turning for the nursery. I've been gathering inspiration pictures, and knew I wanted to do something dark and masculine.
I soon learned is HARD finding examples of nurseries that aren't "baby-ish". My favorite types of nurseries are eclectic and whimsical but are still spaces an adult can enjoy. That's one reason why I loved Erika's nursery so much... it was playful and eclectic but not juvenile.

Here are some of my other favorite nurseries that all have that same playful-yet-works-for-adults-too vibe:
Julian's Nursery - LeSueur Interiors
Ory's Nursery - Courtney Loop
Ashley Putman's Son's Nursery
So that's the beginning stages of our son's nursery! We have purchased a couple "big ticket" items and I can't wait to share them with you! Stay tuned :)

  1. I love all the Jenny Lind cribs.

  2. Hi Brynn

I'm so excited to follow along on your nursery decisions! I too loved Erika's nursery diaries! Congrats on having a boy! Here's a link to my son's nursery.... I tried to keep it less "baby" and more me!

  3. I can't wait to see your nursery story unfold! I'm sure you've been all over the internet for ideas but a couple blogs that come to mind immediately when looking at your inspiration pictures are "86'n it" and "making it lovely" (the latter just painted her daughter's room a deep beautiful blue!). Best wishes during this fun time for you!
(sorry if this is a duplicate - I didn't get a confirmation that my comment posted)

  4. Great ! If you're looking for dark walls, you should check Dana's choice on House*Tweaking and Lauren's choice on Chezerbey. Good luck !

  5. Congrats on your baby boy!! So exciting! Looking forward to seeing your baby's room come together. :)

  6. So happy you are sharing with your readers during this wonderful time. Please keep blogging! You have such great taste and are an inspiration. Your blog was one of the first I started reading. I loved Ericas too. Unfortunately once designers get too busy they drop their blogs. It saddens me because one gets attached to following someones blog and then it all ends suddenly. Please keep up the good work!

  7. Yes, I'm with you on doing a "not too baby" nursery! I'm due in Feb. with a boy and believe it or not his nursery is BLACK! ;) floors, walls, ceiling - all black. Trust me - it's going to look good! If I ever get around to actually designing it.... oh and i love those jenny lind cribs - great price and so classic! Can't wait to see the nursery unfold! -Boo

  8. yay for a baby boy! we had our little guy 5.5 months ago and have loved every moment. congrats!

our baby's room is also dark, and not too "baby". if you are interested, here are a few photos: http://www.five2eight.blogspot.com/2013/08/wesleys-room.html

  9. I love the way you put it - playful but not juvenile. These are three of my favorites, too! (Also, I think this is muuuuch easier to do for a boy than for a girl).

  10. I'm going to guess that one of those purchases is a Jenny Lind crib! :) (I made sure to track one down for my baby too - they're just too cute - and classic!)

  11. Can't wait to follow along with this series! We have a baby boy who will be 6 months at Christmas and wanted a nursery that would look like the rest of our house. I also LOVED Erika's series (miss that blog so much), used Julian's nursery as my main inspiration for ours and would move right into Ashley Putman's house in a heartbeat.

  12. Have you seen Lauren Liess's nursery?

THANK YOU for taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate each and every comment.
