Living Rooms

I've been dreaming of a new sofa lately.... I think purchasing your first nice sofa is an adult rite of passage and we haven't been there yet.

Our current sofa came with the house that my in-laws owned in California. It looks okay but it's really uncomfortable and small. I had plans of putting granite in our kitchen in 2012 but my gut is saying to get a sofa first... we DO spend every night on it!

My current favorite is Crate & Barrel's Verano. It's soooooo comfortable and deep but isn't boxy.

I've been checking out sofas and sofa colors and living rooms on Lonny and Pinterest...

  2. Hey Bryn.  I wanted a cream couch when I bought mine but was too scared.  :)  Cream and white are still my favorite and I find myself drawn to them in pictures.  I am a fellow Charlottean and recently started a blog.  We are having a Christmas giveaway through today if you or any of your readers want to enter.

  3. If you want a sofa that will last you need to think 8 way tied coil construction versus a sinuous coil.

  4. I love that you feel that way too - that the couch is a rite of passage!  When we bought our first REAL DEAL couch last year, I totally felt that way.  So much so that I didnt want hubbies or dogs on it - that lasted about a day...  But still, I'm super protective of it because it was the most expensive piece I've purchased to-date!

DO IT!  Merry Christmas to yourself :)

  5. Completely agree on investing in a good sofa. Have you seen the Essex sofa from C&B?! Super comfy and great English roll arm classic. Bet you'd love it.

I just got the Azure sofa from Crate & Barrel - really happy with it. Points for being made by Lee Industries in USA.  I also have a slipcovered sofa from Arhaus that's held up well for the
past 6 years. I recommend C&B though for the lines they carry and wonderful customer service. Good luck!

  6. We have the Hawthorne sofa from Room & Board and really love it. It's similar to the C&B one you like. You can see it in our family room here, though it's gray. (Hubs was too nervous to get the white.)

(And yes, scary HUGE grown-up purchase.)

I also used the C&B Willow sofa for my first client. It's great in person, though maybe cush-ier than you're looking for.

  7. I think I have most of those images saved on Pinterest!!  Great taste, Bryn! ;-)  I'd love to get a light cream couch but with a 5 and 7 year old and a chocolate lab, it would be like throwing thousands of dollars straight into the trash.  Actually, wipe Cheetos dust, dog hair, and fruit punch ONTO the dollars and then rip them in half and THEN throw it into the trash.  Dare to dream.

  8. I second Kacey's response. I have two girls and a black lab and well our current leather couch isn't holding up well so I know for sure we could never have cream colored one! I keep telling my mom (who works for major furniture making company hq in the midwest)  that they need to test their couches out on my family. If it can stand up to our lifestyle it can stand up to anything! I love those couches though. I will have to pin them later!!!

  9. We're in the same place, although I'd planned on a new sofa for next fall and now a four-inch rip in the seat cushion is pushing that up a bit (knew it was on it's last legs, but not THAT close). Like Molly below, I'm thinking the Hawthorne sofa, but there's no convincing the bf until he sits in it. Good luck in choosing!

  10. lovely sofa styles, I'd look for a three cushion sofa - we have a two cushion one and the cushion are not holding up as well as we thought they would -- We want to buy 2 sofas for our living room and nix the chairs for more seating / relaxing

  11. Bryn, just a thought, but if it were me, I would hit up High Point before buying.  There are still pop-up liquidators everywhere, and there are a few permanant ones in Lexington, as well.  When we bought our first "adult sofa" I bought an after-market sample from Miles Talbot-- english arm white velvet, exactly what I wanted from Lee-- for a grand total of $400 at an after-market sale.  I took the rest of the sofa money I had set aside and hit up the (now defunct) Thomasville outlet for a chair and ottoman, bought a seagrass rug, and some new lamps for pennies, all in H.P.  Worth the drive to save some dough!

  13. My husband and I just purchased a "real" sofa.  I really wanted the Essex from C&B; he really want the Verano.  I bought the Verano to surprise him and much to my surprise, I LOVE IT!  We got the light color and have a black dog, I was a little nervous, but he doesn't get on the furniture.  My favorite purchase to date.

  14. Buy a great sofa you love and you will never regret it!

  15. In my experience, a long bench seat is so much more versatile than a multi- cushion seat. No one wants to sit in the "crack"!  This type of seat is sleek and clean, visually, as well. Best of luck!

  17. We just got the potterybarn grand solano and love it - one solid seat and slip covered! white canvas :)

  18. We saved our pennies and bought the C&B Axis sofa and have never once regretted it.  They make the most comfortable sofas!  I made a white slip cover for mine and wash it twice a month and it still looks brand new.

  19. Hey Bryn... Merry Christmas!!! We took your advice and went to Hickory Furniture Mall to get a sofa that we love! Would definitely recommend the same to you.. they have beautiful upholstery and if you can go during the After Market sale, then you can get more crazy discounts. Hugs! Georgine

  20. Bryn, whatever you do, do not buy a couch from Crate & Barrel. My husband and I saved up for our first "big" purchase and bought the Petrie couch from C&B. We had it for only 12 days and it ripped! C&B was absolutely horrible about customer service. I wanted a refund and they refused. The problem with them is that they don't actually make ANY of their products. Everything is made by vendors. So you would think C&B would have excellent customer service since they're not actually making any products....but NO. All they would offer me is new cushions. I told them I would NEVER buy anything from them ever again and that I would tell everyone I know about my awful experience. I would recommend Ethan Allen for your couch. My best friend used to work for them and their customer service is above and beyond. It will cost you a lot more but it would be worth it......
