Half Moon Window??

Sometimes you scratch your head and think "what were the builders thinking??". An e-decorating client of mine contacted me about their master bedroom with a crazy half moon window above their bed:

The client contacted me to help figure out what in the world could they do with that window?? They also wanted it to be blacked out because it lets in too much sunlight while they are trying to sleep.

And here is my solution:

A tall headboard, a blackout shade and a mirror. Looks like a completely intentional design and no one will ever know there is a window behind there ;)

Here is the rest of the plan for the room:

  2. It's not safe to hang things over a bed (esp a great big mirror) it's clear that a baby is sleeping with them so all the more reason to play it safe. even if it was extra secured on the wall think of earthquake, tornado etc. It's just not safe.

  4. I don't think the mirror that high up looks "completely intentional." It's way too high for a mirror, and it will look very strange when the room is complete. I agree with the other commenter who suggested a wall of curtains. All of the items together on your mood board do look nice together, but I don't think they will look so good when executed. I will be interested to see the final pictures if your client actually does follow-through with your suggestion.

  5. I had a similar window in my old apartment. We cut out a wooden board that fit right into the windowcap and painted it like the wall, so that when you looked at the window it just looked like a small build-in-shelf.

That was a pretty good solution :)

    Love your blog!!

  6. I like the mood board overall (and the gray will be so soothing!) but a mirror up that high seems strange, even if it does have a hidden purpose. I think it would look off. Could they do a wall of curtains instead? You could still use the tall headboard to break up the space. Something like this (pardon the ugly link): http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/how-to/how-to-make-a-floating-headboard-043144

  9. Great solution, Bryn! It seems like the window was an afterthought...but the room you've created is lovely now!

  10. Well aren't you a smarty! Conceal the unwanted window, yet still reflect the remaining light in the room.

Loving the material for the roman shades!! Will you share the source?

    Beautiful choices!

  13. I really dislike these type of windows. My sister in law has one in her baby's nursery and talk about a pain in the butt...it took some creativity but they came up with a plan to cover it and make it look nice. I'm loving this board! Great job Bryn, I'm always impressed by your talent.

  15. I have never understood windows like that. I wonder how major a project it would be to just remove it. Probably not very DIY-y.

The board you made for the room looks great--very luxe. I am wondering if you considered doing a sort of do a "gallery wall" of mirrors so that it's not just that one.

  17. That was the first thing I thought of too! Underneath the mirror will be a blackout shade like this: http://www.amazon.com/Redi-Shade-3362548-Window-72-Inch/dp/B000LG7G0A so from the outside it looks like just a shade. Also, this window is either on the side or the back (I don't remember which) but not the front.

  18. I'm wondering what this will look like from the exterior. I'm guessing the window is at the front of the house, which is why the builder got fancy with the half moon window- not that I agree with the choice, but I do wonder if it will look strange to have the window blocked on the front.

  19. Are you willing to share your source for the mirror? My husband and I have been searching for this type of mirror for our bathroom but have yet to find the right size.

  20. Uhggg! I would NEVER cover any window but then again I'm a HUGE sunlight junky. But I gotta give you props as your ideas look fab. I too love that bedside chest.

Brilliant! I wonder too what people think when windows are off balance and just strangely placed or strangely shaped.

  22. Hi Bryn, way to go blocking that foolishly placed window. I wish builders were more savy when it comes to decorating and even practicality! I love the way you propose a tall headboard. Really nice!

  23. Those windows are ugly. Your mirror idea is brilliant!

  24. We can not say enough about your idea board.wow that room will look amazing. And yes replace that window.

  25. The baby hasn't been sleeping with us for months. Also, we live in an area with no earthquakes or tornadoes. Thanks for your concern...
