shit happens.

Sometimes shit happens. Like last night, when my husband and I went upstairs to my future office to find that our printer had leaked all over our new carpet.

STUPID stupid me for leaving it on the brand new carpet. Surprisingly my husband didn't yell at me like I thought he would.. what a good guy.

We've learned as new homeowners that sometimes, shit happens and you just have to go with the flow.

Luckily, we have a pretty large piece of spare carpet the installers left for us, so we'll have this piece patched and we'll move on.

I thought I'd share this little incident with you guys to "keep it real".

[ Some of you guys asked if the carpet is wall to wall sisal. I actually wanted the sisal look but not the scratchy-ness of it so I went with berber. I'm very happy with it! It's actually much lighter than in the above picture.. the lighting was dark in that room. ]

  1. Sadly, I don't know that I've ever commented here! I'm an avid follower/reader, and am constantly impressed by your work. This, though, made my day. I know that sounds bad, since it's probably going to be a pain for you and your husband to fix, but it's such a relief to see a blogger keeping it real. Sometimes I feel like stuff like this only happens to a select few of us; it's nice to know that no one is immune!

Good luck and thanks again for being willing to share the good, bad, and ugly!

  2. My husband has a carpet cleaning buiness, and he had a client with the same issue this week; he got the stain out! If you find a GOOD carpet cleaner, you may not have to patch it. I would offer my husband's contact info, but we are in Dallas, TX. Good luck!

  3. Oh my god. I would never have thought a printer would leak like that. Thank goodness you have a carpet remnant to use as a patch. So sorry!

  4. Don't call yourself stupid! I didn't even know that could happen! Hang in there!

  5. Oh no! I would have been so mad at myself. But you are right, these things happen. You pick up and move forward.

  6. oh no. it hurts me to see this...glad you have a patch and good attitude!

  7. It NEVER occurred to me that a printer would LEAK like that. Poor babies. I'm sorry this happened. Maybe Stanley Steamer could get it out?

  8. Hi Bryn, I LOVE berber carpeting. I have it in our current house, and, having just bought a new house, I'll definitely put berber in the bedrooms here too. Great product for a great price.

  9. Oh no! So sorry to read about what happened, but at least you have some extra to patch it up!

Things like this are alway happening to me as well in our house. You just need to roll with it and laugh.

    :)

  10. oh, that sucks, hardcore. fortunately you have that spare carpet, hope the repair goes well

  11. A lot of carpets have a stain removal guarantee for a minimum of 5 years. Check to see what you have & if ink is included before you patch it. We just got new carpet in our bedrooms and everyone I looked at had some sort of warranty - from those at the carpet store to HD and Lowes.

  12. SOOOO sorry! I seem to do stuff like that all the time but you've got a much better attitude about it then I usually do! I think there is a touch of nail polish on the carpet of any bedroom I've ever lived in.

  14. Don't you hate when that happens? Try paint. My kids and HUSBAND knocked over a gallon of paint in my family room while playing. And its still there... Talking about some S***!!!

Good thing you guys had carpet left over. We didn't!

  15. Yeah, shit definitely happens! We closed on our house, left for a wedding the next weekend and came home to 2 feet of water in our basement. Guess where we had stored all the unopened boxes? Yep, the basement!

Nothing like a little flood to remind you why renting was so wonderful ;)

  16. It's frustrating when that stuff happens, but that's life. Everyone's been talking about the Ruthie Sommers site where she talks frankly about the reality of a home vs the perfection of a magazine spread; the furniture gets stained- hopefully after the photoshoot, though, right?

  17. What! I had no idea a printer could leak!?

  18. I actually let out an audible gasp when I saw the picture. Oh my gosh.....I would cry! Is there any way to clean the stain???? I think I would try every possible option under the sun before I resorted to patching the carpet. So sad!!!!

  19. well that friggin sucks. i would never have thought that could or would happen. i suppose you know it does (clearly) but you don't really expect it to. i don't think you should feel bad about leaving it in that spot. i know, easier said than done.

and thanks for clearing that up about the sisal-i thought it was, too. do you know what color berber that is? we are going to put berber in the basement, and i like the look of yours.

  20. I feel your pain! Last week we came home to a present left by our dog Harper. Thankfully my parents own a carpet steam cleaner and we were able to get the stain (sort-of) and smell out. This also forced us to steam all the carpets downstairs!

  21. I spilled liquid silver leaf on our carpet a year and a half ago. I was making a starburst. We haven't gotten it patched yet, but I don't even notice it anymore!

  22. This reminds me of a similar new home owner incident I had. We bought a steamer to remove wall paper from our bathroom. When someone was at our front door, I left the steamer on in our ceramic tub face down. Sure enough, 10 minutes later when I returned to the bathroom I found a gray square smack dab in the middle of the tub that could not be rubbed out. Of course, this prompted the $400 tub refinishing. D'oh!

  23. Hi, There is this stuff at Lowes called Folex..it is in a retro looking white bottle with purple writing (I think it's purple). Anyways, it has been around forever and they clearly have not changed the design of the packaging, but it is $4.99 for a huge bottle and it is seriously magical....you just spray on and let us sit and then dab off....I has seriously removed so crazy stains that I bore witness to....Folex. Just a thought before you patch your new carpet.

  24. Oh no! I'm so sorry about your carpet. Sounds like you took it in stride though. We had a similar incident with our hardwood floors. In between the stain and the sealer a bottle of champagne exploded in the kitchen and got all over the bare floors. Now we have little spots everywhere. The floor guy has fixed them twice, but whenever we put the sealer down, the spots reappear. We are trying to decide if we need to redo the whole room or just live with it and get a cool rug for the kitchen.

  26. Oh, that stinks!! I would have been sick! You have the right attitude, though - those things just happen sometimes and we just move on and know that things aren't perfect ... and, in its own way, that's more perfect. As an FYI, though, I do know the best carpet and upholstery cleaners in Charlotte!

  27. that really sucks.
    ugh. i am SO sorry!
i hope the patch job turns out ok! love the carpet though...it looks great-even with a huge black ink mark on it.

  28. shit does happens. but it still stinks. that's a great attitude to have though - and that was so sweet of your husband - I'm not sure mine could have contained himself!

  29. Awww, I hate that for you! Throw a fierce rug over it! This catastrophe will prepare you for the messy marvels of children's accidents...

  30. check out the stain removal warranty on your carpet and check into having a professional come out and clean it. i recommend not trying to get it out yourself if you're going to hire someone. sometimes the chemicals we put on carpet makes it harder for the pros to get the stain out.

  31. OMG - I'm so sorry that happened! Heartbreaking, just glad you can patch it. Don't feel bad, owning a house is a comedy of errors for sure!

  32. oh darn....maybe the printer is faulty?
    I never knew!!!!

  34. The first day our new sofa arrived in our new house my husband and his dad decided to sit on it and have a beer. Guess where my husband's beer ended up? ON OUR NEW SOFA....and down on the new rug. That's life I guess!!!!!
