Joining the Campaign

Someone asked me on my formspring.me what I thought the next trends were. I'm not sure if it's a trend per se, but did you notice not one, but two pieces of campaign style furniture in the new Lonny Mag? Especially after seeing this gorgeous piece in their last issue:

Here are the two pieces in the new issue which launched today:

Jenny at LGN recently blogged about campaign furniture and picked up (and painted) a great piece on Craigslist:

Well last night I was cruising Craigslist and happen to find a listing titled "bedroom furniture". You can imagine my excitement when these pictures were what greeted me:

You better believe I snatched them up as quickly as I could ;) The handles are not drop handles like Jenny's and like in the first image, but they are almost identical to the handles in the second image (with the striped walls). I have no idea when or what I am going to do with these pieces.

Also, the tall dresser is missing a drawer. I've seen on HGTV where they moved the bottom drawer to the top, and sawed off the bottom of the dresser and added a thick piece of plywood for the new bottom. I have zero carpenter skills, but I'm thinking I need to start somewhere. MIL - want to come out and help me?? ;)

  2. That is an awesome find! Great job! If you wanted a more simple carpentry finish you can have a bottom made for the top drawer and paint the inside so it seems more like a shelf. We are doing something similar with a salvation army find I picked up.

  5. Love your finds! I recently found a campaign desk and am super excited to get started--just not 100% sure how to get the corner hardware off!

  6. I concur with Mrs. H. Just make a bottom for that top drawer and turn it into a shelf and find some great baskets to stick in it. Would look lovely!

  7. ugh I'm still kicking myself for letting a campaign dresser go at auction!

  8. Cut the dresser down to size. If you do the shelf use boxes, not baskets, to keep the structured and clean look of campaign furniture. It's not terribly hard to cut the bottom off a dresser, just take your time. A bit too much off one corner and the whole thing is catawampus. Cut off in stages and shaving the last little bit off will make it more level.

I'm insanely jealous of your Criagslist find. I've been searching my Nashville listings for weeks looking for a campaign piece. I look forward to see what color you paint it! What about red for your black bedroom?

  9. I had furniture like that in my bedroom as a teenager. It was orange! I loved it. Gosh, I wonder if it's maybe down in my parent's basement?...I should check next time I am there.

  10. I like the shelf idea. I would use it for my cable box in the bedroom and put my small flat screen on top. Yes, we are "tv in the bedroom" people, LOL.

  11. I think the open area could be used for tv/stereo components if used in a small room, it would be dual purpose- dresser/media stand. of course i would come out to help but you have to have something for me to sleep on first!

  12. Great finds! What if you put some wood inside the dresser to turn the missing drawer into a sort of shelf? That way, you could avoid power tools altogether :)

  13. I'm excited to welcome you to the Charlotte area. I hope you will find some really great stores that I have not been to and write about them. BUT! I don't think I'll like having you as a shopper in my Craigslist area ;). Just make sure you leave some good stuff for those of us who still have to work 9 to 5s. Teehee.
But seriously, welcome! If you have any questions about this area, please let me know. I am a native.
