Today is my 28th birthday. My mother in law recently emailed me a link to this post I wrote 3 years ago before my 25th birthday. Of course, I lived through it and have memories of what I felt at that age, but it's so interesting to go back and really see what my hopes and dreams were for myself.
Lately I've been thinking a lot about my life and the choices I've made and a lot of it has to do with the fact that both my brothers are graduating this weekend. One of them is graduating from med school and is now officially a doctor. My youngest brother is graduating and going on to get his PhD in Engineering. I've mentioned this before, but I come from a family of doctors and engineers and mathematicians and I'm sure you can tell I'm the polar opposite. A flighty creative mind in a family of geniuses. From an outsider's perspective, I'm sure it appears that I am the "unsuccessful" one of the group and I don't think a lot of people really understand what I do for a living. And looking back, I now realize it was a really bold move to leave a respectable career for such a big dream (starting a business with hardly any experience??)
But here's the God honest truth - I am so thankful and blessed that I did what I did... today I turned 28 and can honestly say I LOVE what I do and I love my life (and I do believe those two go hand in hand). I wake up every day and I get to do what I am passionate about for a living, and I truly believe that is what makes someone successful. And I still have so far to go and I cannot wait for the future!
So, 28 - Bring it on!
(and now I just need to get my act together and have my recent work photographed so you guys can actually see what I've been working on!!! I'm working on this, I promise!)
Awww, Happy Birthday! Thanks for the insight. You should be proud that you had the guts to do what you really wanted to do. Despite all the challenges. Very inspiring.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! Hope you enjoy your day! I started following your blog when you still lived in CA. How great it was when I read you were moving to Charlotte. I am from NC and miss it terribly. I live in Charleston, SC. While everyone thinks this is the best place to live, it is not for me. I miss the big city and the mentality that goes along with that. While I am envious of the places you get to shop, I will just bide my time, when I can get back there. Keep doing the great job you are fulfilling and never lose your dream!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I feel like your 25th birthday post is mirroring my life right now to a tee. Except swap your 25 for my 35. ha! I too work in advertising and love writing but have always felt interior design is my calling. I can't afford to go back to school, so I was wondering how you got started. ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I was your age when I left a very good job to be an event planner (which my parents thought was not a good idea!). I have done events for Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J and have planned over 200 weddings and events. If you love what you do, then you will succeed. Many people are good at their jobs but it takes passion to reach your full potential!!!
Happy Birthday! I think that you are on the absolute right track in being cognizant of how happy you are in what you spend your time and energy on. Good for you! And I swear, the older you get, the less you will care about comparing yourself to others.

Reading it made me feel connected to you because at the time I was feeling very similar - stuck in a respectable well paying job and feeling creatively unfulfilled. ReplyDeleteI have admired your work for a while and absolutely love your style. I'm so glad that you shared the post from when you were turning 25 because I am currently the 25 year old you. I turned 25 in March and don't really like my job at all. I loved interior design even at 13, but decided not to pursue it in undergrad because some family members made me feel like I was destined for more serious things. Now all I want to do is go home and work on furniture and read interior design blogs at work. Last weekend I sold refurbished furniture at the Lucketts Antique Market in VA and was so disappointed to return to my day job today. I think it's time to just for it.

It sounds like you are right on track! I love your blog for many reasons, but one is that we seem to be very similar. Same age, wedding anniversary, being thrifty and interior design. I run my family's window treatment workroom in Boone. I love your design styles!
