White Space

In all my graphic design classes in school, we were told white space was the key to good design. Maybe that's why frames with very large mats work so well.

These frames above are from Pottery Barn. They range from $47 - $56 each. Not bad if you want just a couple, but pricey if you want to do an entire gallery wall.

Right now I'm working on a gallery wall with thick mats and small artwork. Instead, we are using Ikea Ribba frames and I am going to have the mats custom cut. A sort of budget compromise if you will. I can't wait for the finished product! I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh and speaking of... I snapped these pictures this weekend while watching a rerun of Sarah's House. Even though I've seen every episode, I can watch this show over and over and over.

I love the look. You could also buy very inexpensive Ikea Rast frames. Michaels sells mats that you could cut yourself so there's more mat showing than what comes with the frames. Just a cheap, DIY option.

*Not Rast, Ribba frames.

Exposures has Rive Gauche frames that are really pretty.  They are kind of pricey but I always buy them when they have a 25% off sale.

I love doing the custom mattes on cheaper frames! I've had mattes cut at Micheal's for so cheap! When their custom framing is on sale 50% off so are the custom mattes!

The cost of framing really puts a damper on the gallery wall look! I'm hoping to have a little list of sizes when Aaron Brothers (a chain, not sure if it's national) has their regular Buy One Get One for a Cent sale. Best time to stock up especially if you need some bigger sizes.

I'm so with ya on catching Sarah's House over and over and over!  I was thisclose to slipping into a glorious weekend nap when I heard it coming on.  So much for that nap!  Can't wait to see your gallery wall!

So funny, I watched that same episode.  Love Sarah's house.  Can't wait to see your gallery wall.  Just did mine on my blog a few weeks ago.

We love gallery walls! Everyone has photos, postcards, recipes, envelopes, book covers - any of these can be framed for a very modern, personal touch.
