(I mean no disrespect to L.L. Bean... it is a cute dress and they have some great stuff in their new Signature line!!)
Were any of you an American Girl doll fan? I was obsessed - I read the books over and over. But I never did get a doll - I hated my parents for it back then, but now I get it. They were very pricey and I was a little too old for dolls (9 or 10).
Samantha was my favorite, btw.

i just laughed so hard!! I had Kirtsten and Felicity too! I actually still have them(attic)and will pass them on to my daughters I think. Great post! I LOVED these dolls, and there are copious amounts of girls with their moms that come to Chicago for the Macy's-sized American Girl Place and spend copious amounts of money on everything to do with them. Thanks for bringing back good mems :)

ReplyDeleteI have Samantha and played with her every single day. I thought she was made for me because of the dark, thick hair and big dark eyes. I was always so bummed when my parents would buy every little accesory that went with her.
I have Addy,too. And a smaller version of Kirsten (remember when they came out with those?).

I was obsessed! I speed read through all the books at the library for every single one of the original girls. Then when Felicity came out I had to get her. Saved all my few pennies for almost a year to buy her for myself :)

ReplyDeleteToo funny! You are so right. I was soooo obsessed with American Girl when I was little. I read all the books and had Felicity. She never left the rocking chair in my room because I never wanted to get her dirty or mess up her hair. I still have her packed at my parents house.

ReplyDeleteI also was obsessed and am a bit sad that the company was sold and is now so huge and commercial. I remember back in the day when it was just the good ol' catalog and what not, now it is so above and beyond. Anywho, I had Felicity and all the books for all the girls at the time and still have all of that stuff in storage. Let's hope I have a girl, or I'm in trouble :)

I had to play with the catalog (yes seriously the catalog was like a giant paper doll) for two years before my parents finally gave in and bought her for me...meanies!! I played with her all the time and ended up getting Felicity, Kirsten, and Addy as well!! I loved my American Girls...still do and in fact they are sweetly packed away up in my attic waiting for my future daughter to love as much as I did!! Can't wait to pass them on, but with my luck...I'll have a boy!

ReplyDeleteI had wanted Molly so bad but the year my parents finally caved was when the "just like me" dolls came out so I ordered one with red hair and blue eyes and named her Claire. I had a platform bunkbed with only one mattress (on the bottom bunk) and the upper bunk became Claire's apartment. My dad made her a bed and table and I loved cutting out pictures from magazines for her "posters". I was probably too old for dolls too (8?) but I loved the independent lifestyle I invented for her :)

ReplyDeleteOh the shame.. I think I was still playing with my Molly doll until I was ohhhh (small voice) thirteen. I loved my dolls so much! It's really interesting how much Mattel has changed the company..a lot less focus on the educational history stuff, unfortunately.

I read all the books too and my doll came with a "write your own book" thing. Being the dork I was, I came up with a pretty good story. She was adopted and her name was Audrey. I should've tried for a book deal. Hmm...
hilarious. That would be a great adult halloween costume, doll in tow of course.

Samantha was my fav too! I never had the dolls but I had the first four books and I read them a lot too. I actually just told my parents to go into the attic and try to locate them so I could have them for a nursery. (still think its a girl :))

ReplyDeleteI was obsessed with Felicity as a kid! I never got the doll, but I do have the book set. My daughter, who is almost 2, is totally into dolls. My friend's daughters were getting rid of their American Girl dolls...they have like 5...and gave my daughter one...she just loves it and can't put it down! We ended up with a bunch of different books and some clothes. My dad's friend bought a doll for each of her daughters, they never touched them, so she is giving them away! She is going to be giving us the Samantha doll, along with her book collection and a bunch of clothes! Such luck...I am thinking about saving it to give to her at Christmas!
ReplyDeleteDid you hear they retired Kirsten?! And they are retiring Felicity at the end of the year as well! My mom asked if I wanted a Felicity doll for Christmas...even still I am not sure I can justify her paying almost $100 for a doll that won't get played with!
being a bit of a spoiled youngest child i had all the main dolls (and one i designed myself who was asian to round out my diversity quota). american girl dolls are definitely part of the reason that i became a history major in college :)

I loved American GIrls... one of my fondest memories was going to Felicity's Tea Party in Williamsburg when they unveiled the new doll. I had Samantha and adored her and her books... now I can't believe how many dolls there are!! This post literally made my laugh out loud!

She's my favorite too (probably because we share a name); I would have been in elementary school when she came out and I remember feeling so special. I also remember informing people that I had my name first, just in case they were confused by that. Elementary school logic, what can I say. They were $$, so I remember my mom sewing new outfits for her instead of buying them. We took a quilting class together too so that we could make a blanket for her. I'm going to have to call my mom and thank her for the memories!
