Bar Progress

This little bar is the first thing that I've really styled/unpacked in our new house. Here was the before:

And here it is now. I won't say "after" because it will probably change since I still have things to unpack.

First thing I did was spray paint the $15 IKEA shelf black.

Most of the items are special to me.. I'll tell you a little about them.

I love my horse and soldier lithograph. I purchased it from One Kings Lane - it's a Fernando Boher for Natural Curiosities. I'm making it a point to start collecting art (especially when I can get a good deal!). The black piece is four very old bottle openers framed. The vintage glassware was picked up at Sleepy Poet and they are my husband's favorite! The wine opener is my husband's from 8 years ago - he found it in Barcelona and has used it ever since.

This black whiskey bottle I got for $1 from a local "picker".. I'd like to take the gold paper off of it but it's an old limited edition bottle so I'm not sure if I should or not. It has a depiction of the Alamo on the back of the bottle. Check out this listing to see the bottle. It's not worth anything, but it's fun. I really love this kind of stuff.

These glasses represent events in the 70's and how they affected the DOW. I researched them and they were given as gifts to employees at Morgan Stanley. Again, I don't think they are worth much but I really like this kind of old stuff. The ice bucket is also from the 60's or 70's. The little Mozart profile is drawn with pen and I picked it up at a flea market in Raleigh with Jamie. The little painting was given to us by Matt's grandmother.

Currently the bottom of the shelf holds Charlotte's water and food, but I'm not sure if she likes it there or not.

As you can see.... I LOVE old stuff! Especially with stories.

[Sorry for the poor picture quality.. the lighting in our house isn't very good this early. Also I'd like to know we need another coat of paint in the kitchen and obviously switch plates. :) ]

  7. Wow that looks great! I love the black decanter.

I checked out those shelves when I was at ikea last week after seeing them on your blog -- the floor model seemed a little rickety, do you feel like it's sturdy?

  14. Looks great!

You probably know all this already but I figured its worth mentioning: if you keep your liquor in crystal decanters, the lead in the crystal will leak into the liquor over time. So while very pretty, not a good idea to leave it in there.

  20. I love all the art work that yu've incorporated here as well as the history behind everything.

You've inspired me to designate a little place in my own apartment for a bar.

I've blogged about your post and my plans over at my blog. www.manaynay.com

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  21. I can't believe no one has commented on this! Your bar looks great and I want to do something similar in our dining room. I love that you included things with meaning and I agree - it doesn't have to be valuable. All that matters is that you like it. Do you mind if I show one of your images in a post as long as I link back?
