When I originally planned to work from home, I knew I had to develop good working habits from day one. And that includes working from a desk 9-5. I was worried I'd get into the habit of lounging on the couch in my pj's eating potato chips with my laptop on my lap.
Surprisingly, I have come to really love sitting at my desk all day and working... I don't have to force myself at all! Maybe because I finally love what I do? Or maybe because I love my desk so much? or both :)
One of the biggest improvements to my desk is my mousepad I DIY'ed. Normally I don't use a mouse pad, but this apartment complex painted their counter tops with texture - boo. So a mouse pad was a must (I haven't had one since high school I think???)
The diy aspect of my new mouse pad came from the amazing mind of High Street Market. First, you must click here and check out what she did to an IKEA 99 cent mouse pad. Here, I'll post some pictures:
One of my pet peeves is having to move the mouse over to keep from falling off a mouse pad (hence why I never used one), so I decided to make a HUGE mouse pad. I don't have pictures of the "during", but the materials consisted of:
- left over cork board (from my diy corkboard project)
- fabric (small remnant left over from a client project)
- spray adhesive
- scissors
Easiest DIY ever.
Some misc. comments:
- I love my desk chair. It was a splurge but well worth it since I'm in it all day long.
- I also love my second screen. It's a left over from my husband's college years and by no means fancy, but it does the job and is PERFECT for idea boards (you can see one I'm working on now)
- See my little bird frame in the first picture, behind my lamp? I just got it on sale at Anthro... I got it because of the crown - now that I live in the Queen City and all :)
- My Inspiration Board is coming along! I love adding tear sheets and pictures to it. You'll notice I re-did it with my spray adhesive, and had to take the ribbon off. I may add it back someday when I get around to going to Hobby Lobby.
That's all. Let me know if you DIY a mousepad, too!
Thanks again for the idea, High Street Market!
EDIT - I just got a fun comment: "Looks great! I love the chair as well. What type of candle do you have burning? Also, do you work to music? What type?"
To answer the questions.. the candle I have on my desk is my favorite candle I have right now. It's called DANI in the Zante Currant scent. I only listen to music when I'm designing.. I can't have other words going on when I'm writing (emails, blog posts) or else I get too distracted (A.D.D.??) But it's almost always Regina Spektor :)

I think it will be on my list of things to do today and I'll post it tomorrow ! Your desk is lovely, no wonder you don't mind being there. An inspiration board is also very high on my to do list. Have a great day !
ReplyDeleteLove the white chair & your leopard mouse pad. I did one with modge podge & paper & I have to say, its' a little slippery. I need to change it to fabric. Love the blog! NG
ReplyDeleteThat's Nati, but my mousepad isn't the leopard print one, that belongs to High Street Market. Mine is the striped. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! Love your workspace!
ReplyDeleteGiant mousepad - what a great idea. I live in an apartment and work from home too - our desks are nearly identical! Yours is prettier than mine, though. No surprise there!
ReplyDeleteCute idea! It makes me want to run out and get a mouse. I picked up the lamp a few days ago for my own desk and I absolutely love it. I've been looking for chairs and the same one you picked is on my wish list I'm just a little nervous about how comfortable it is because I have a really bad back. Your desk is lookin' good!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good - the mousepad and the desk in general! I love that you made a huge mousepad that not only makes it easier to use but adds a great pattern to the area - love the gray stripes. I can't wait to have a desk area like that soon!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I love your chair (wish I had bought mine for that price, and yours looks "cushier" than mine. jealous.). :)
What a cute and stylish desk! You just inspired me to update mine! :)
ReplyDeleteLove to include your inspiration board in my "creative collection" posts. Send me some images - pretty please.

What a great idea, I don't use a mouse, but if I did I'd be copying your idea. Your desk chair does look comfy, I'm looking for one, do you mind sharing its source?

ReplyDeletequick question ... where did you find that grey stripe fabric? i'm looking for something exactly like that ... please tell!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a mousepad! I'm gonna have to make my own soon.
ReplyDeleteCute idea, and a good way to change up your fabrics if you're so inspired with something new! Enjoy Charlotte, my cousins live there and LOVE it!

Well if I had your desk space I'd have no problem spending the day there either! I love it! Maybe I'll make some fun mouse pads for my co-workers.

ReplyDeleteLove your desk! I don't think I would mind sitting there for 8 hours a day!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get those great white boxes? I am in need of something with lids.
Thanks!
Love the desk! I have an extra screen too, but for 2 years have had no IDEA how it would benefit me. I dont even know how to hook it up!
ReplyDeleteWhat else do you use yours for? And how the heck did you get 2 different things on each screen? This might be a little beyond my computer skills... :)
Keep up the great work!
