My first New Years Resolution is to start blowing out my hair straight semi-regularly. I must write out the many reasons so I can remember while I am sweating and my arms hurt:
- My hair is in a horrible in-between stage right now. I'm growing it out again. I always do this cycle.. grow out, cut short, grow out, cut short.
- Once it's actually straight it's easier to maintain. My curly hair never gets oily (one of the perks!) so I can go for days without washing it.
- I personally think straight hair just looks better.
{engagement shot, circa 2007}
- It's starting to get too cold in the morning to air dry my hair.
I can prob keep up this resolution till the summer when it gets too hot to blow dry.
Anyone have any great go-to straight hair products? What about dry shampoo? I've always wanted to try that stuff... I really need a new flat iron, too. Ugh so much work, we'll see how long this lasts.
My friend has hair as curly as yours, and the best thing she ever did was have it professionally straightened. She only did it once, and it was expensive, but she said that brief period of time when she had straight hair was heaven.
ReplyDeletegreat pic! i've been stalking your blog forever and thought it was about time to comment:)
ReplyDeletewe have very similar hair- yours is a little more curly. i'm a product junkie, but right now my faves are bumble & bumble straight and oscar blandi dry shampoo. and i love my sedu flat iron! way better than my chi irons. good luck!
I try to straighten my hair often too, but with a baby, it's hard to find the time (or energy!). 2 products that i LOVE and use together: It's a 10 Miracle Leave in Product and Loma Pearatin Fortifying Repairative Serum - so much better for your hair than Biosilk. Don't be afraid to use a lot of it, it will make your hair super soft and smell good (just make sure you only use it before styling, leaving it in to air dry will make it look greasy, obvi.)
ReplyDeleteYou should try the Aveda Brilliant products, they have a really good Universal Styling Creme that I personally love! Keeps the frizzies at bay. Also, the John Frieda products at Target do a pretty good job, especially the hair serum. And I've had good luck with the Matrix shampoo/conditioner, although I'm going to try Ouidad next based on a friend's recommendation. Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteOh and also I bought a $35 ceramic flat iron at Sally Beauty Supply and I swear it's *almost* as good as a CHI. I keep waiting for it to conk out so I can have an excuse to just splurge on a Chi, but it's been with me for a good 5 years now and it's still going strong :-)
I have this awful mix of curly and wavy hair so I straighten my hair very regularly. I go through the same grow it out cut it short cycles as you (I just cut off 12 inches 2 weeks ago!). I own a chi straigtener - they are expensive but they work better than any straightener I have owned (and trust me I've owned many many straighteners over the years). The other thing that works great is this kenra thermal spray (it's activated by heat) so I use it before the straightener once its dry and it helps my hair to straighten easier and it helps it to stay straight. Sorry this was so long but I hope it helps.
ReplyDeletei have a really really curly hair, so much that when i professionally straightened it (in a wellknown saloon in my country), it only took a few washes before it was all curly again.
ReplyDeleteI think it is great to have both..the curly is beautiful, and the straight is chic. Something for every ocassion.

I use Oscar Blandi dry shampoo (the spray) and I've also heard good things about Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo. I can usually go four or five days without washing with that. I also have a Solia straightener which I love. When decide to get a new straightener check out folica.com. They have a lot of great deals and helpful reviews.
ReplyDeleteHi, I think you and I have the same type of hair, I also can go for 3-4 days without washing... the best product I have found and I highly recommend is BioSilk Silk Therapy Hair Treatment, you put it on your wet hair before blowdry, and a little more after, if you want to go super straight then used a flat iron too. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteMy hair isn't as curly as yours, but I bought a CHI straightening iron and it's awesome. Do you have Trade Secret in CA? If so, if you buy the CHI there and save the box and the receipt, you can bring them in for another CHI anytime - even if you break it or lose it!
ReplyDeletecute photo! dry shampoo is great - I have fine straight hair and I use it when I head out for the evening after a full day of running around, it puts life / volume / texture back into my hair. It's a great way to extend the wash and style of your hair :)
ReplyDeleteugh-I hate straigtening my hair, and it's only moderately wavy. But as a fellow air-dryer, I know what you mean about the weather changing. My sister recently gifted me the "Instyler" and I can't say that it's all that awesome. In fact, I had trouble using it, but I am hair appliance challenged.
ReplyDeleteI like Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine line.
ReplyDeleteI tried dry shampoo and did not like the result. I think the problem was that the dry shampoo for brown hair is brown, obviously, and got on my fingers when I would scratch my head and all over my shower when I eventually washed it. It was pretty gross.
ReplyDeletei have curly hair also and go through phases of wearing it straight and then curly. i got a chi flat iron a couple of years ago and it is the best thing even, def. worth the high price. i've been thinking about the dry shampoo too cause i can usually get away with only washing my hair every other day, but i've heard that you need to find one that is close to your hair color...
ReplyDeleteI have curly hair that I straightened for ten years. When I got engaged, my hair was shorter than my shoulders. The best thing I did was let it go curly for about 3 years so it could get long. Now it's the longest it's ever been, but not looking that great curly now. I love it straight, but everyone else likes it curly. My hair gets oily in a few days so I definitely need some recs for dry shampoo too.
ReplyDeleteP.S.- Your look beautiful in your engagement picture!!
I straighten my hair most of the time, and use a lot of hair product to keep it under control. I find my hair usually gets kind of limp and greasy on day two, but the dry shampoo helps soooo much! I've used Oscar Blandi and liked the results, but the one I'm using now is great because it's unscented and has a cool applicator: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P216709&categoryId=B70
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!
I have friend with curly hair (my own is stick straight) and she swears by that John Freida Frizz Ease stuff.
ReplyDeleteI have pretty oily hair. I have to wash it every day. I always keep a can of Batista Dry Shampoo on hand, for those days when I oversleep and don't have time for a shower or on Saturdays when I'm just going to the grocery store. It's good but it's not a miracle worker. Your hair doesn't feel just right with it and if you have dark hair it does leave a haze because it's white/gray powder. But the haze isn't all that noticeable unless you're looking for it. I have tube of dry shampoo that has what looks like a makeup brush on one end and it's for dark hair but it does leave dark powder marks on my skin and it takes a while to apply.
I would buy a can of dry shampoo if I were you. It can be pricey, but it can give you one more day of not having to wash your hair.
i have crazy curls and i swear by dry shampoo when it's straight! i use oscar blandi and i get it at sephora. it has a nice clean, slight lemony smell. i love it!

I have curly hair too. And I love it when its straight. I also don't have to wash it as often--I guess that's a perk of having dry hair! Anyway, I use a little bit of baking powder instead of the dry shampoo. I've tried the dry (spray shampoo) and they both seem to do the same thing. Just sprinkle a little in your palm, work it into your scalp and brush it through! Brushing (as I'm sure you know) doesn't work when its curly!
ReplyDeleteHi Bryn, my hair isn't quite as curly as yours but I still need to fight with the blowdryer and straightener everyday that I wear it straight. My hairstylist was trying to talk me into Keratin Treatments which apparently straightens your hair without any chemicals... I haven't tried it yet but am seriously considering it after the craziness of Christmas. I guess its relatively expensive, but not much more than highlights... Let us all know if you try it :)
ReplyDeleteI also have curly hair and love to straighten it every once in awhile. I just got a new hot tools flat iron at Beauty Brands for $19, marked down from $60. I really like it, it has a really small head, but that allows you to make curls so its a double whammy! I love paul mitchell super skinny serum (plus this helps shorten drying time!!) and Rock-n-Roll dry shampoo.
ReplyDeleteI love your hair straight, but you are a curly girl...and that is awesome! People pay to get curl like that!
Your hair looks really pretty in the photo!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHave your tried Ouidad, the cut, styling technique and hair products....It has changed my hair life! LOL no exaggeration! I’ve had many wars with my MASSIVE curly mane but Ouidad has me actually saying I love my curly hair and prefer it to straight. Just another option!
Try Oscar Blondi dry shampoo - either the spray or the powder. I personally think the powder lasts longer, you just have to brush it in really well,so you don't look like you're going grey! I love that you have to write it out to hold yourself accountable. I can totally relate, but just so you know, you hair looks great both ways!
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing in that photo. Everything about you looks perfect.
ReplyDeleteI have hopelessly straight hair and envy people with curls. It's one of those cases where we always want what we haven't got. I'm always trying to find products that will "activate" my non-existent curly locks.
Good luck with your resolution, but know that you'll be beautiful either way.

Have you tried 'Real Curl' by Pureology? It is my favorite product recommendation for days that you go curly! Also Moroccan Oil is fantastic for straight or curly hair, and it can help your hair stay soft with all the straightening. My hairstylist said that radiant heat (think sitting by a fire) is a great way to dry curly hair faster in the winter.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that Ouidad products are great too!
ReplyDeleteHi Bryn! It doesn't look like anyone else that's commented has found this little gem... but I swear by my Corioliss straightener/flat iron! It has lasted me now 3 years and still as good as the day I bought it! I questioned whether the price was worth it (~$90), but it's been one of the best beauty product investments I've ever made! OH, and it's a 2-in-1... will do an amazing job straightening your curly hair, but can also be used to put beautiful large curls/waves in your 'do. I have stick straight hair & use it in place of a curling iron - love it!
ReplyDeleteSince you're down in Cali you might be able to find them in the same location... in OR/WA you can find them at specialty stands in major malls. Here's their website: http://www.corioliss.com/
Good luck! :)

AVEDA Hang Straight is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAlways towel dry really well before you put any product in. And use clips to go in small sections.
Good luck. If you can get the hang of blowdrying and straightening really well, you'll only have to do it every few days :D
