Mistint Adventure

I took a tip from my friend Holly, and when I was at my local Lowe's running some errands, I decided to check out the mistint paint section. Boy I'm glad I did! I found two really great dark grays for only $2.50 each.

I was so in love with the color of that large painted swatch that I had to do something with it right away. I was searching all over the house trying to find something to paint. I finally found an old vase that I could spare, and did a little experiment. I painted the inside of the clear glass.

It turned out pretty cool!

I decided to put it on the sofa side table. I'll probably put a candle in it later, but I had to put it out asap because I just love the color so much!

Comment Q&A:

Love what you did with the vase, but I would be careful putting a lit candle in there. I'm not sure how it would deal with the paint.
I totally agree- I'm afraid the flame will catch it on fire. I'll pick a candle that smells nice even when it's not lit :)

What type of paint was this? Did you do anything to prep the vase?
The paint was just your basic semi-gloss. It actually didn't prep the vase at all except wash it out. I painted with a paintbrush. You can see brush strokes inside the vase, so if you want your painted vase to look high-quality, I suggest using a foam brush. But I was anxious and didn't really think it'd turn out anyway, so I used a regular brush.

I saw a project recently (on Martha Stewart's website perhaps) where they painted the insides of ball jars and baked them on low (to set the paint I assume) and then they were votives!
Wow - I had no idea about the baking step - Maybe I'll try that? Or maybe since it's already dry that step is long gone? Thanks though!

  1. oops paint is the best! I've ended up painting a whole room with an oops color I found on sale at Home Depot. Someone else's trash is your treasure... and it's so cheap. I love the painted glass. It's a very cute and unique way to incorporate accent color to a room!

  11. This gives me a good idea...I recently received 4 quarts of Glidden paint when they were doing that give away thing. I thought maybe I'd do some accent walls if we stay in this apt or if we move in the new one. I really like the colors so being able to use them on something I'd keep would be even better!

  14. LOVE the finished product and being a follower of Holly's blog myself, I checked out the "oops section" at Home Depot today too!

When you said that there were brush strokes inside the vase, I thought, Hmm putting a beautiful patterned fabric or wallpaper inside to finish it off might be a good idea? :)

  15. We just finished painting our kitchen/dining room a shade of grey we NEVER would have picked, but it is WONDERFUL on the wall--kinda turns green and almost blue with the light. It was oops paint, too, and I prayed the whole time I painted that the paint would last. We're working on the beadboard backsplash now--a lovely shade of "kate spade green" that was also oops paint. $10 for a new kitchen!
