watching the weight

You may have noticed on my twitter last Thursday I started Weight Watchers. I'll share the journey with you just in case anyone out there is interested in trying it out.

I normally would not have signed up on my own, but a group of friends at work put it together - we hold all the meetings at work and it was too good to pass up! The cost is $99 for 9 weeks.

I weighed in on Thursday. Since last year, I've already lost 15 pounds, but I joined WW to lose the last 10. I also joined to support my husband, who is also doing it with me. Before I joined, my perception of Weight Watchers was that you had to be overweight to join. I'm in the healthy BMI rage and thought I may be turned down. This is not the case! It's a great program to help you learn about portion sizes, working out and just being healthy.

So far our experiences have been really great. The Fourth of July weekend was a bit rough, but WW allows you to have "cushion" points so if you go over your points it's not the end of the world.

The thing that surprises me the most is I'm never hungry. I get 20 points a day and my husband gets 31. My husband actually struggles reaching all his points! It also has opened our eyes - we added up a typical meal we'd eat at Chilis and it was around 60 points. That's 3 days worth for me! I'm really realizing that I would mindlessly over eat for no reason.

Today is the first weigh in since my initial weigh in. I'm going to post my pounds lost on my sidebar more to keep myself in line and also just in case you're curious!

Feel free to ask me any questions about it. So far I'm really enjoying it. 8 more weeks to go ;)

UPDATE - Wow, I just had my week 2 weigh in and I lost 4.4 lbs. I'm sure it's all water weight and I'm expecting to gain some of it back next week :-/

Someone asked how I survive off of 20 points - it's actually very easy and I am rarely hungry. For instance, here is a basic day:

Breakfast: Fiber Plus Bar (soo good) & Tea = 2 pts
Lunch: Smart One's Pot Roast & water & fat free yogurt = 5 pts
Snack: Small apple & 100 cal popcorn = 2 pts
Dinner: Baked chicken (with breadcrumbs!!) & smart pasta with ranch a couple ranch dressing spritzes & diet coke = 10 or 11 pts

= 20 pts

You should also add in some veggies to the dinner (0 pts) but we didn't have any on hand.

  1. Good luck! I started a few months ago and I love it. So easy to follow and it's really helped me get my portions under control. Definitely helps with the mindless eating.

  2. I've heard great things about Weight Watchers! You're one more person who says that it really works. I like the concept of it teaching about healthy portions and physical activity. It really is about a healthy lifestyle instead of just counting calories for short-term weight loss. I can't believe the one meal was 60 points! That is eye-opening!!!!

    Keep up the great work!

  4. You look great Bryn. Thanks for posting this, I also thought that it is for people that are more overweight than myself. I have about 10-15 pounds to lose. I'm going to have to look into this.

  5. Good luck. I've been doing it for about 3months now and I've lost around 14 pounds. I would ideally love to lose another 10 to be back at my HS weight. We'll see how it goes.

If you need any hints for different types of food to eat email me.

I've found lots of low point options. I actually just finished full size pizza bagels for only 2 pts a piece. Yum.

Thanks for the comment on twitter. If I ever figure out how to comment on it I'll write back on yours. I must learn more about twitter!

  7. Bryn, So glad you posted this! I was just talking about it with someone today. I also have only about 10 pounds I want to lose and am within the "healthy" BMI range for someone my height. I was worried I wouldn't get "accepted." I really need the portion control lessons as well. :) I look forward to the updates!

  10. That is so great! how do you live on 20 points? can you give some good low point foods? I tried it a few months ago but unfortunately fell off the wagon quickly. Now I'm in crunch time until my wedding and would be will to give it a shot for the next 9 weeks.

    Thanks!

  11. I'm doing WW online and lost 4 lbs the first week but have gone back up two and am holding. I noticed that you didn't eat very many fruits and veggies in your example daily meal...How do you not get hungry w/out the fiber from fruits and veggies???

  12. Good luck!! The hubs and I have been doing WW for a while now and we've always had really good results with it. Just stick with your points and the plan and you won't be disappointed. I'd love to hear your weekly results.

  13. I love WW when I was on it a couple of years ago. Remember to not deny yourself anything, just portion control it or save your pts. It makes it easier to know you have a reward. Good Luck!

  18. I joined last July and lost almost 15 pounds (at 5'1", I didn't have much to lose). Now, I'm at lifetime and am a receptionist for WW! It really does open your eyes at how easy it is to overeat. Good luck!

  19. one of my friends was in treatment for an eating disorder a few years ago and she said that WW was the only eating plan that they recommended because they do make sure you are not undereating and value healthy choices. Good luck!

  20. You really do look fantastic. And in your Yuck picture, you still looked good.

Soon after I get this baby out, I'm going to join too. Because my portions and choices are seriously out of control, and I could use the professional help and the network of support.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  23. You look awesome! I tried Weight Watchers about 5 years ago and I lasted only about 2 weeks - I could only eat 20 points as well and was just miserable and hungry ALL the time! You are so lucky you can get through the day on only that - just reading your meal plan makes me starving, and I JUST ate :)

  24. Hi Bryn, I remember you from D&R on the nest. Congratulations on your ww success! Two friends of mine lost ALOT of weight on weightwatchers and since I got married I have gradually gained about 25 pounds so I decided to try ww for the first time. I started ww 8 weeks ago and I love it. I have lost over 11 pounds so far. I am fitting into my smaller clothes and I feel so much better. I eat so much healthier. I love the 0 points vegetable soup and those 1 point vitamuffin chocolate/chocolate chip muffin tops. I am hoping I stay motivated and stay on this forever. My mom has adult onset diabetis and so do many others in my family. She has to give herself a shot 3 times every day. I saw her doing it recently and I know I don't want to have to do that! And....I know it is something that can be avoided. Good luck on ww and I also want to wish you good luck with your new design company! I am so happy you are doing that and also that you are thinking about a new name for it. I think it will be extremely successful!!! Take care.
