Then yesterday we finalized our taxes and well..... owning a business is awesome until it comes time to pay taxes! (note to self, I will be paying quarterly taxes this year).
So after being depressed about my taxes, I realized big house projects aren't going to be happening anytime soon.
I've actually started thinking about this years and years ago.. I saved this article in my bookmarks back in 2009, before Pinterest existed:

A long, long time ago (this was actually back in 2008!) Erika posted some pictures of her studio. Her studio did have (maybe still has?) her floors painted in Benjamin Moore's Camouflage. I loved her floors then and still love them... and I think that color may also work really well for our kitchen. It will tie in with the green ottoman we have in the living room. (But it's a very subtle green which I like).

I'm at the point where the floors are driving me crazy, and what do I have to lose? We still plan on replacing the floors eventually (with either wood or tile), so I might as well do something to help me like them a little better until then :)
My MIL, aka project partner in crime, is coming in May.. I may need to volunteer her to help me with this project ;)
I painted the hideous linoleum in my foyer two years ago, and haven't looked back since. The area gets a lot of traffic and the paint has held up beautifully. Like you somewhere down the line it will get replaced, but it's a great stop gap measure. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think that is a good idea. Give it a whirl! I am self employed too and paying the quarterly taxes does help. We also save a third of every paycheck into a separate account and pay the quarterly's from that. This year we actually over saved and had money leftover! Woohoo! That was a pleasant surprise!

ReplyDeleteWould using indoor outdoor paint help? I think you should do it! And if you hate it, you can always save for the new floors. And having been over at your house many times and obviously interested in decorating, I can honestly say your current floor doesn't stand out to me as an eyesore. But if you painted it, it would stand out as a wow factor!!!
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely do it - you have nothing to lose! But I would incorporate some pattern too - even if it's just subtle, tone on tone stuff. That would ground the room nicely and give it some interest,

Bryn, I'm glad to hear you are thinking of doing this too. My big plan for this year is to paint our kitchen linoleum and our cabinets. I haven't seen any real world examples though, just online. It seems like an affordable option to make the space look better without tiling. Excited to see how your project turns out. I'll be sure to share mine too. :)

ReplyDeleteWe had a bit of the same dilemma... our bedroom had carpet and the rest of the house has wood floors. We aren't ready to spend the money to put in/restain 3000 square feet of floor, so we painted the subfloor in our bedroom. I love it and it really wasn't a difficult project to do.

ReplyDeleteI actually just painted my living room floor an oil based high gloss white and love the way it came out! I wanted to throw out a suggestion of ripping out the linoleum and putting down high grade wood sub floor. We did this in our living room because we can't afford real wood floors yet but it's super smooth, looks great and is CHEAP! Ours are almost 3 years old now and still in great shape. Definitely go for it! I painted my bathroom floors as a "just to get by" project and they have held up for 3 years now. I have no plans of changing them because they are so easy to maintain. All you need to do is scuff the floors a little with sandpaper, then roll on a coat of primer, then two coats of paint. I just used a basic semi-gloss latex white paint from Sherwin and it worked like a charm! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think this is definitely a good idea, but have you considered vinyl tiles? Caitlin Wilson used marble gray vinyl tiles in her rental kitchen and they looked amazing. It might me a little more long-term too. No matter what, I can't wait to hear about it! Your blog is such a great read!
ReplyDeleteThe tutorials are for linoleum and sheet vinyl flooring. Do you think it would work the same for VCT, like you have? I also have VCT all over the first floor of my home and would love to upgrade it while I save for hardwood.
