When the pineapple was rare and costly and sometimes the (rented) centerpiece of gala parties. Yeah, merchants used to rent out fresh pineapples to ladies so that they could put them on pedestals. They'd be rented out for a few parties. Then the REALLY rich folks would actually buy them to eat!
