Choosing Our Sofa

It's a funny thing... I choose sofas all the time for clients, but choosing one for myself is a very scary thing. I've bought sofas before, but they have always been inexpensive options for other rooms besides our family room. But it's finally time to buy one that we will use every single day for years and years.. ah!

One reason why it's so hard for me to pick is a sofa is because I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. I also have access (and discounts) to so many furniture companies, the options are daunting. I actually think you'll be surprised at the sofa I've chosen!

Here are my parameters: large and deep with natural linen color, down wrapped cushions and sleek lines.

Here are the runner-ups:

The "In My Dreams" Sofa: Lee Industries C1296-03

I adore this sofa from Lee Industries. I am a huge fan of Lee Industries, but they don't make their sofas very deep. I inquired about having this style made custom in the size I want, but it was just way out of my price range.

The "Best For Our Budget" Sofa: Savvy Home

photo

Savvy Home is a local store that sells inexpensive furniture. This sofa is around $800 and would have been GREAT for the budget. I really considered getting this sofa to save money, but after a lot of thought I decided against it. We lounge on the sofa every single day so I wanted something that would last. Also, I didn't love the tufting on the seats.

The "Almost" Sofa: Moss Studios

I've blogged about this sofa before, and I really did ALMOST choose this one. I saw it and tested it at market and it's sooo comfortable and the style/dimensions were right on. Here is why I ultimately didn't choose it... I would have had to increase the back height of the sofa which would have been an additional cost. Also, the only color/fabric I liked was 100% natural linen and was a high grade of fabric. So the final cost of the sofa would have been at the very top of my budget. Also, even though a slipcover would be SUPER practical (especially when we have kids), I just couldn't get past the idea of how wrinkled a slipcover would be in 100% linen. And the final deal breaker.. my husband loves a firm sofa and I love a soft sofa, so we have to meet in the middle. This sofa was VERY very soft.. you just sank into it. As much as I love that, my husband would have been miserable.

So, here is what I have chosen: The Lounge Sofa from Crate & Barrel!

photo

I really love this sofa. I've been thinking about it every since they came out with this new natural linen-like color and finally decided on this one.

Here are the reasons why I chose this sofa:

The sizing: It's 93" x 46". Yes that is a big ass sofa... but that's exactly what I wanted! I wanted something that felt almost like a bed, that you could just sit back and curl up and watch HBO shows in (they are long shows, but they are our favorite).

The color/fabric: The fabric (Talbot Linen) looks like linen but is a poly/cotton blend... which means SUPER durable. It's the perfect color for our space.

Comfort: The seat cushions are firm (for husband) but down wrapped (for me).. a perfect compromise.

Looks: I love the sleek lines, and it looks good from the side (which is how you see it when you walk into the room).

Price: Aside from the Savvy sofa, this is the most budget friendly choice. I get a designer discount and I also have a $150 gift card. I am a big fan of Crate & Barrel.

So that's our future new sofa! All I need to do is go purchase it ;)

  6. Such a nice looking sofa, but I would think twice about the "lounging" part. We purchased a deep sofa and it has turned out to be the biggest pain in the you know where. If your not really tall your legs dangle when you sit all the way back. This in turn makes the cushion push forward and you have to constantly push it back. I wish someone would have pointed this out to me before we spent a small fortune on our couch......sorry for being debbie downer.

  7. Pretty, pretty sofa! I seriously buy sofas like every 3-5 years. Finding one that lasts more than 10 can be frustrating. I decided from now on I will buy only antique and have them reupholstered! I hear C&B's furniture are good quality - Love them!!

  9. Good choice! We have the lounge chaise sectional in talbot latte (cafe?). I looked high and low for similar models and kept coming back to this one. The online reviews are great and price wise there was no comparison.

    Love it!! A great choice.

  18. I LOVE the sofa, but I think I am just being biased as I have one similar. The one downfall to a light, cream coloured sofa is stains/wear and tear - be prepared to have to do annual cleanings at the least.

  19. My husband and I purchased the Lounge sofa when we first got our condo (about 4 years ago) and we love it as much now as we did back then. Still looks good and still suuuuper comfy.  It was one of those purchases we're so happy we made. You're gonna love it!

  21. Man...you will be able to take a drool worthy nap on that one!  I love deep sofa's...and you are right...they are hard to find without looking like a ship!

  22. Looks vs. comfort ... always hard to balance for a sofa.  And the upholstery ... love the linen look.  I have been wanting a linen look forever, but with four pukey cats, it's just out of the question!

  23. This is a really fun and easy addition to that couch. It's really convenient that you can change that according to your mood or other design changes around the room.

  24. Hi Bryn! How are you liking your sofa these days? I am considering buying one and would love to know your thoughts - has it started pilling/sagging?

  25. I would be interested to hear an update on your purchase too! I've been looking at this sofa for a while now and would love to hear how you like it after having it awhile!

  26. The crate and barrel lounge is a horrible sofa. I own it in a sectional version. It looks good for a month or two. Then the fabric pills, the feathers are coming out everywhere and the worst of all, the bottom cushions sag down.
