During the craziness of May...

During the craziness of May, I used a Groupon to get our upstairs bathrooms painted. These were the last unpainted rooms of the house, and they were the ones that needed it most!!

Here is a picture of the master bath with the previous owner's items. But other than removing the popcorn ceilings/rug/window treatment/storage over the toilet, our bathroom looked like this for TWO YEARS. !!!

I had the walls painted a creamy white (Creamy by Sherwin Williams) and all of the trim painted gray (Useful Gray by Sherwin Williams)

Here are pictures of the bathroom as it is now (you'll have to excuse the bad iPhone photos... I'll save the pretty photography for the real afters! These are just "during" shots...)

It feels so much lighter and brighter, and cleaner! But there is still so much to do....

As you can tell, the floors are in DIRE need of changing. The vinyl is so old and so nasty and so dirty, no matter how hard I clean them. And now that the walls are fresh, the floors feel so much worse. (We're also in need of window treatments.. I think I'm going to do cafe curtains).

The counters and shower surround are original to the house and are a creamy faux marble. I've decided to just save the difference and keep them. Sure it'd be wonderful to have everything new and exactly how I want it, but we've decided with this house to do what really needs to be done and live with what we can live with.

I've 99.99% nailed down the bathroom floor tile. It's this tile from The Tile Shop:

It's the same tile Young House Loved used in their kitchen but in the color "Milk". I adore it. And best part is - the milky cream color of the tile matches the existing countertops. I'm planning on a light gray grout that matches the trim paint color.

I can't wait to do the floors!!

  1. Good stuff!!! I have been eyeing the painting groupons that have popped up in CLT recently! But the room we want to paint usually exceeds their max. In any case, I love the light walls, grey trim. Paula did it recently on Two Ellie and I love it, definitely may try it in my house sometime. Really love the tile, I think it's a nice option for the back splash in YoungHouseLove, but you don't think it will be too slippery for the floor?  I'm sure you've considered that already... ! Great job!!

  2. I love the little penny round tiles.  I think they add the perfect texture to a bathroom.  I'm looking forward to seeing the 'real' afters!

  3. Where did you find that rug? Also, do you know what size it is? The rug I have in my bathroom is way too small, and I want something like this. Thanks!

  10. Bryn: We used Tec Accucolor XT Grout in the "Silverado" color for the light grey grout in our upstairs bathroom. It's held up really nicely and I think the color was a perfect complement to the mosaic marble tiles. You can check out a photo here

  12. Love the paint color. How did you hang the shower curtain from the shower door? Did you remove the shower door completely?

Oh wow, it looks beautiful! So light and airy. I hope you do go with that tile. Jon & Sherry {www.younghouselove.com} chose a similar tile for their kitchen and it is fun and fabulous! You have done such a wonderful job making your new house a home. I've loved watching the journey! Keep up the great work! :)

  19. I really love that tile and it will look great in your bathroom.  I think the changes you've made already look really great - it looks so much more open and airy. That window next to the tub is so pretty and big. Cafe curtains would be really nice there.
