Making a First Impression

The front of your house is very much your home's first impression. I've never been good with first impressions (I'm shy and awkward), but I think I can help our home make a good one.

Here is our entrance right now:

Not bad, could be better.

A quick, inexpensive fix I'm going to do is paint the white storm door black.

Although I like the scale of the sconces, I'm not a fan of the brass and the shape. Instead, I like the simple shape and black color of these:

The house numbers (which I blurred for privacy reasons) are also very traditional. I'd like to throw in a bit of a modern touch with these house numbers:

I once saw an inspiration picture of a very traditional home with Century Gothic-like numbers and it created the perfect juxtaposition. If someone has that picture or knows where I can find it, I will be so grateful.

I really would love two tall black planters, just like Holly's:

I haven't seen any that I love as much as hers though (love that trellis design on them!).

A simple natural doormat is my preference:

Eventually I'd also like to replace our mailbox which is rusty and yucky. And landscaping- but that will come with time and sweat.

Those are my simple (and for the most part budget friendly) plans to transform our entrance to better reflect the inside of our home. Now it's just a matter of doing it! :)

ps- did you see Design*Sponge's post about entrances yesterday? It was great! Here are some of my favorites:

(I actually considered painting my door this type of yellow. "Egg Yolk" by Martha Stewart to be specific. But I just don't think it's in the style of our home. It's gorgeous here though!)

  1. Just a thought, but have you thought of painting the brass black? We did that with a fixture we weren't too crazy about, but didn't have money to replace just yet. LOTS of tape and some black spray paint later--now it's our favorite fixture.

Just thought I'd share, in case you get to the point where you'd rather spend money on planters or something else awesome.

  4. I think the black fixtures will be perfect and really stand out much more than the brass. The numbers you chose are so clean and fresh. They'll look great!

  6. Just a thought, your home appears to be some sort of a colonial....and the white with black shutters appeals to that. Your choice of lighting and house numbers look a bit "off" for what appears (from your picture) to be a very traditional looking home. They almost look too modern or contemporary, almost a little Frank Lloyd or mission-style....is that the look you're going for?? Sorry! That's just the first impression I had :))

  7. love the simple black fixtures! and i am all about a set of matching urns on the front porch! southerners are all about planters dripping with gorgeous flowers. i totally agree with the yellow door---sooo pretty, but really takes the right house.

  8. I love the yellow door too but it doesn't match our style of home either. We have a lot to do on the exterior of our house as well and look forward to seeing your upcoming posts.

  9. I really like the black fixtures you pointed out. I think they would be a nice add. I am also looking to change up the accessories on my house, but I can't find a mailbox I like. Any suggestions on where you may look? Thanks in advance!

  11. I think some simple additions will really make a big difference!

We've been in our home for 3 years and I'm still stuck on what to do with our front stoop. It's tough!

  13. I love the light fixtures and I think painting the storm door black will look great. I can't believe I'm going to to make a suggestion to a professional designer but here goes:

An even bigger impact would be to paint the entire surround black. So, the fluted columns and the molding above and everything inwards towards the door goes black.

  14. The yellow door is gorgeous! I'm a huge fan of brightly colored doors-- green, red, doesn't matter. It's equivalent to a pop of color in your shoes!

    Hope you are well.

  16. Hi Bryn- Love the blog. I don't think I've ever commented on here before, but wanted to send the link of the house I think you were talking about: http://shelterinteriordesign.blogspot.com/2010/06/bungalow-love.html

It's a traditional bungalow with Century Gothic numbers. Shelter featured it the other day and I think it looks fab. Hope this helps!

  19. it looks great already...only needs a few of your touches. In our last home we used a black spray paint from Michaels to paint the brass on our old light fixtures. Just a thought b/c I agree the fixtures that are on the house now are perfect in size.

  20. Ok, I'm digging that yellow door. I was just lamenting to my husband the other day about living on base housing. All the houses look identical and we can't do anything to the front of the house. I would totally paint our front door yellow or aqua or lime if I could!

  22. My storm door is exactly the same as yours. What are you doing to prep it? Light sanding and primer? I have to do the same thing to...The brass is killing my soul.

  23. Love the classic black, an "off thought", you could use that great color that copper patina's, that gray-green-blue, for lanterns and or door, mmm, love that color with white! And if and when you're ready for the LANDSCAPING give me a holler, I'm happy to help if you want it! *Amy

  24. You can always tell a little about the person who lives inside a home from the outside of their home...a reflection of them is what we see. Hmmmm..I want a black front door, maybe one day! :) If not outside, maybe on the inside then.

  25. We have a black front door and I love the way it looks. The only issue I've had is that the color has faded a bit and will need to be repainted more often to keep it the shade I like. Black doors always make a statement.

Love the lanterns you choose as well.
