Normally I'm a gray paint type of girl. No matter what the color is - brown, blue, green - I like gray undertones. But I am going to switch gears and paint our master bedroom cream.
The back story of this decision - I really had no idea what to do with our master.. I wanted something to just hit me. And boy did it ever! Matt's grandma brought us the most beautiful crewel fabric when our family visited. It was her mother's and it's so special to us. I'm going to use it as the focal point in our room, so I need to pick the paint color around it. The background of the crewel is a dark beige. So cream it is!
Here are some pictures of cream bedrooms that I have collected. Aren't they so relaxing?
I just need to pick a color now. I want something warm, light (but not too white), not too pink, not too yellow.
Do you have a cream paint color your love?
(ps - Today I'm guest posting some of my current favorite things over at i suwanee!)

We used Benjamin Moore Ballet White in our daughter's room and we love it! I definitely don't see any yellow or pink undertones, it's beautiful. Can't wait to see your finished space!
ReplyDeleteOur bedroom is cream, it's been 7 years and I'm not at all tired of it. In fact I'm beginning to like it enough to want to paint the rest of the house the same color. It's one of the old Martha Stewart colors for Sherwin Williams called Dune.
ReplyDeleteAntique White by Sherwin Williams seems to be a popular one. I am going to use Elephant Tusk by Benjamin Moore in my living and dining room. I don't know if I love it so much because I love the name, but I think it's pretty perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou can google images of it in rooms but I like this post from Great Bones, Great Pieces because it's on a piece of furniture. It helps me to see the color in a different context.
I love the color vintage linen from Behr Premium paint
ReplyDeleteI love the color Vintage Linen from Behr Premium Paint
ReplyDeleteWe used the Woodrow Wilson Linen in our bedroom. I love it so much I think I'll start with that in my next house and just build from there!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite creams are both Benjamin Moore colors. OC-8 Elephant Tusk and OC-33 Opaline. I painted my back hall Elephant Tusk and think it looks great with my white trim! Opaline is also very nice and a tad lighter than Elephant Tusk.
ReplyDeleteI've just painted my master bedroom in cream - Benjamin Moore Seapearl. Its a beautiful soft colour, no pinkiness at all. You can see it here:

One trick is to paint everything - walls, trim, ceiling - in the same colour to make it more expansive.
Bryn--I hope you don't mind me asking questions in your comment section!
ReplyDelete@ Sara EF eDesigns can I ask what color you painted your trim? I need to pick a color for my board and batten and I am stumped. I'm looking at Linen White. It doesn't look yellow in the test swatches I painted, but I'm afraid it will once it covers an entire living and dining room. Cloud white is looking a bit stark.
Hey Bryn:
ReplyDeleteI heart your blog soo much!!! Congratulations on the new house!!!!
About Cream paint options: I can't tell enough people about the paint color we chose for our master bedroom...it is Ralph Lauren's "Architectural Cream" (we had it colored matched in Behr)-(if you need the color codes I can send them to you if you can't find a swatch) ...It is sooo perfect. It has a gray undertone to it. At night it takes on an almost oyster color. I am in love with it!!!
Can't wait to see the pics when you get around to it!! No pressure or anything!!! ;)

I love the Farrow and Ball whites/offwhites and creams but as they can be dramatically altered by the type of light in the room and by which way the room is facing I would try a few sample pots. If only you were closer! I could start my own shop with F & B sample pots and you would have been very welcome to borrow them!

I used Behr Oyster in my living room, hall and dining room.
ReplyDeleteI think cream is a great color for a master suite... it's so calming and refreshing. Will you miss the black walls from the apartment? I loved those too!
ReplyDeleteSarah Richardson uses a color called "Meeting House" which I think is Glidden. It's her favorite and you know she's all about the cream...
ReplyDeleteYou should really cite your pictures. The interior designers, or at the very least, the publications, that created those rooms deserve the credit for their beautiful spaces.
ReplyDeleteTry ordering a free brochure from Farrow and Ball. I'd never pay $80 for a gallon of paint, so I get the colors matched into Behr. Joa's White and Archive are both pretty creams.
I love cream too!! I worried a bit that it was "out of style" but I think cream is a classic! Good luck with your bedroom and can't wait to see pictures!
ReplyDeleteOur bedroom is cream and I love it because it's a nice contrast to white trim and provides some color without being too much. It's Antique Beige by Glidden. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love cream, it's not white white and works so well with everything, and will make the room look bigger and brighter, love the idea!!
ReplyDeleteYou can't go wrong with cream! And I love the chair in the first photo!
ReplyDeleteI love the bedroom in the 3rd picture and like the idea of doing cream walls. I use both Antique White and Moderate White by Sherwin Williams all the time. Don't be afraid to test out a cream that is slightly tinged towards a certain color direction (they all are naturally). I know you said you didn't want too yellow, too pink etc. The color will chnage on the wall depending on the natural light in the room and you may not pick up the color at all. Good luck finding the color!
ReplyDeleteI love cream because it's as basic and versatile as white but much warmer. You can add any color to it and it will look great, and I don't think it's a color that you can really get sick of. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteWe have SW Rice Grain throughout our house including the masterbedroom and it is the perfect background to our cream and green toile bedding. It takes on different shades depending on the amount of light that hits it but if you have a lot of light in the room it's a great creamy color! I just purchased some SW Creamy paint that I plan to use on a piece of furniture. I haven't opened it up yet to look at it but I've heard it's the perfect off white color from a few different blogs. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI used Benjamin Moore Elephant Tusk OC-8 in my great room, kitchen, and hallways. It just seems like a very clean and soothing color that serves as a great backdrop for a variety of colors and furnishings. I have a very open floor plan where all of these rooms flow into each other and this was the only color I could find that worked seamlessly with everything. I have robin's egg blue silk curtains and turquoise accents all over and it sooo pretty together!
ReplyDeleteCheck out this post from Tracery Interiors. They list their favorite paint colors...including beige/cream

How peaceful. I just posted about bold, wild bedrooms-think I would sleep much better in on of these pretty ones!
ReplyDeleteI am looking for the same color for my master - and I stumbled across Martha's line at Home Depot - Elderflower is the color. It's the perfect combo of white, beige, pink and yellow. Enough pigment to feel like there's color on the wall, and little enough to feel totally light, airy and as if the wall was perfectly kissed.
ReplyDeleteSherwin Williams Roman Column is by far my favorite cream! I have purchased multiple gallons...
ReplyDeleteour bedroom is white on white, different whites in different textures. it's the most restful room in the whole house. the walls are painted with restoration hardware paint - right white on the bottom, mediterranean white on the top. the dividing line is just over halfway between floor and ceiling. we're building a house next year, and i fully plan to reintegrate our current bedroom's look in the new house, i love it so much!! can't go wrong with whites, i say!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, everyone is chiming in with so many recommendations that all sound so good. How will you ever decide? I can't wait to hear. Good luck!

We did our trim in Valspar Waverly Classics "Natural" WV37001 and it's a beautiful cream color. Also, my neighbor used Benjamin Moore™ HC-84 Elmira White, which is pretty close. That sounds gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteWe painted our master bathroom October Sky by Benjamin Moore. I love it! I think it may have a little pink undertone to it, but I think it's very flattering, actually. Good luck finding your perfect cream!
ReplyDeleteJust a comment to 'Anonymous' one of the joys of Farrow and Ball is not only the colours but the quality of the paint which goes on like a dream. Also the slim catalogue of colours are not always an accurate representation of the colour

We used Olympia's Dogwood Blossom - its cream, white, and gray depending on the lighting! We love it!
ReplyDeletegreat post! our home is more cream than white in the main living areas. I love it.
ReplyDeleteTry Ben Moore China White. It is pretty white but has some gray undertones. No yellow. I think you will like it.
ReplyDeleteI have Lamb in my living room...it's an old Martha Stewart for Sherwin Williams color. It is a nice cool cream with a touch of yellow. The SW stores still have those chips and can color match.
ReplyDeleteI have used several different creams in bedrooms that I've designed and I've got two favourites. Both are Pratt and Lambert Cashew and Pastry. Really warm and creamy without being yellow.
ReplyDeleteWe have a darker cream in our bedroom currently and I want to paint it a much lighter cream - like your inspiration photos. I'd love to see what you decide to go with!
