I remember growing up my parents always had white walls. I used to BEG them to paint (future interior designer!) and they finally allowed us kids to paint our rooms. But the rest of the house remained white. (If only I had pictures. I picked lime green. It was actually pretty awesome.)
Fast forward, and here I am with our new home and I didn't even think twice about it - I wanted our family room to be white. There is just something about a white room.
The family room is the only room we're having professionally painted.. the ceilings are too high for me to attempt it! I cannot wait to see how it turns out!
My all time favorite white is Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. But since we have so much surface area to cover (all the ceilings, all the trim and the entire family room), I chose Snowcap White by Valspar to save money. It's also a very beautiful white and pretty similar to Chantilly Lace. If you're one a budget (like us), my advice is to save the expensive paint brands for smaller rooms with big impact.

I’ll be honest, I love white walls, maybe it’s because my walls have always been white, probably it’s my Spanish self :)
ReplyDeleteMost major retailers now have paint formulas other than their own in their systems. I have often picked a Porter or Ben Moore paint color and taken it to Home Depot to be matched. If they have the color name and or number, they can pull up the formula in their system and match it exactly. It saves you money, and helps keep their paint business. :) Can't wait to see your new rooms and ideas!
ReplyDeleteNatalie,
ReplyDeleteYou have to be careful - when you do that the color is almost never exact. I did try it with Chantilly Lace and it didn't work out too well. :(
I am loving white right now as well Bryn. Thank you for the tip on the paint colors, we're on a budget in our rental so that's a great tip!
ReplyDeleteall of these pics are great. stealing them from you promptly...
ReplyDeleteI love white walls when they are purposely white. Painting the walls white because you're afraid of color usually leaves the room looking unfinished and sometimes a little sad. I can't wait to see your new space! I know it will be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny--the reason I have always painted every room in my house is because my parents always had white walls--and, no, she would have never allowed me to paint my own room. :)
ReplyDeletep.s. I had the same luck matching paint. They say it's an exact match, but it never is in my experience.
I love a white room myself. Which makes renting much much easier!
ReplyDeleteI always rebelled against white walls too, and moreso taupe walls when we moved to a new place. I'm in a white-walled apartment now and I actually kind of like it!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great suggestion. Thanks, Bryn!
ReplyDeleteI love white rooms, they're so inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI plan on panting my living room area white and then adding an accent wall avocado green.
Only thing is I've heard if there's not enough natural light the white might look blah, so I'm a little scared.
We've had good luck painting a note card with the color we love and then having that color matched at the store rather than trusting the formula in the computer. We usually get our paint at Benjamin Moore and not at a big box store. Not sure if that makes a difference or not...
ReplyDeleteI keep debating white walls for a our living room but I'm so afraid they will end up a mess. We really live in this room along with our two dogs and I don't want our walls to constantly look dirty! I love the look. This has me thinking about it all over again!
ReplyDeleteWhite, I love it! I'd love to paint everything white!!
ReplyDeleteHere are some pics of where we used to have all white walls! I love the color now, but eventually I'm sure we'll go back to all white ;)
ReplyDeleteMore fireplace/cabinet ideas are welcome!!

ReplyDeleteBefore/after pics from Bryn's parents' house...
I love white rooms too - when we move to our next house that we own I will go white in all the common spaces ... we currently live in a work house and it is all painted a dull dirty pale blue grey - it's horrid .... ahhh I dream of white ... :) le
