When I turn 25....

When I turn 25 in two weeks, I think I'm going to introduce lipstick in my life...

(What I Wore)

Mom - when you come out here we'll have to search for my perfect shade...

::blush::

I'm blushing right now at the kind words Patricia over at pve design wrote about me this morning.

I also did a little interview with her, feel free to check it out :) I had the honor to work with her. And yes, I wholeheartedly mean it was an honor. If you haven't seen her amazing blog and work before - prepare to be hooked!! She is Amazing with a capital A.

Small

I often share my idea boards, but they are usually the large size and full of detail. Kaye emailed me asking me to help her with her bedding, and I wanted to share this with you. It's a great way to visualize something specific - like dressing a bed :)

Details:

- Gray sheets (overstock.com) and a white duvet cover (overstock.com) makes for a crisp, clean bed. The nightstand you see is from the new bedroom set she purchased from Magnussen Home.

- Two large euro shames will be propped up against the pillows and done up in a green lattice print and light gray. The front side green fabric is from Calico Corners and the back fabric is just a basic gray linen, you can find something like that at JoAnn's.

- The throw is a slurge from Crate & Barrel and will lay at the end of the bed. During the winter, why not double up and have two blankets laying at the end - I found the coolest Military vintage blanket from armynavymarinestore.com.

- Lastly, put the long white personalized pillow from Etsy seller theshabbynest up against the two euro shames.

& there you have it! Dressing a gray, white and chartreuse bed.

Found an Oil

Yesterday I stopped by the local Salvation Army. Oh man, did they have amazing furniture. I wanted to buy it all! But of course, I couldn't and didn't.*

But what I did find was a beautiful still life oil painting! There are so many things I love about it. It's a mint green with robins egg blue accents... it even has a little nest with robins eggs in it. It also has oranges [Orange County]. I like art that means something.

I almost didn't buy it - what was I thinking?? Then another shopper walked by, who looked like he knew what he was doing, and said "wow, great find". I walked straight to the checkout.

When I got home, I couldn't believe how perfect it was for my robin's egg blue console table.

Can you believe these pillows (on the couch) have been sitting in their plastic wrap in the garage for at least a year? I got them mega on sale from Cost Plus. I recently found them when cleaning the garage, and voila - they match perfectly with the newly painted console. I love when things just fit like that.

I have to admit, I love the softer pallet I've gone with in this room. The bright yellow stripes were fun, but just didn't fit. I think I'm moving it up to the bedroom.

*It's times like these, when I see so many great things while on a impromptu shopping trip that I want to blog about, that I wish I had a [really nice] camera phone. This brings me to the rug situation.... due to a couple of reasons, I am forgoing the rug for now and I think I may ask for an iPhone for my birthday instead. One main reason is because Charlotte has been having some post-surgery potty issues and I'd hate for a nice new rug to be ruined.

Ode to Seleta

I just can't believe it. I won this amazing dress from Simple Seleta:

Isn't it beautiful? When I saw it on her blog I knew it'd be perfect to wear on my birthday which is coming up. My parents are flying out to spend it with me, and now I have the perfect dress to wear! I'm so so so excited.

I had to dedicate this post to Seleta because she is just such an amazing woman - she has four gorgeous offspring that I'm sure keeps her busy, but she still has time to be fabulous. The word amazing does not describe her home, how about magazine worthy?

And the most amazing thing about her - she always looks so.put.together. It's something I envy, with my wild curly hair and makeup that rubs off after 10 am because I constantly touch my face, a habit I cannot rid. Another reason I brought her up is because I was searching on Etsy and found a blouse that just reminds me so much of Seleta...

Here she is in all her fabulous-ness, in the blue top & pearls..

Be sure to add her blog to your favorites if it's not already on there!

Craigslist Chic

One thing the blog world has taught me is that you really don't ever need to buy brand new furniture again. Sure, it'd be nice to be able to go to Crate and Barrel and pick out a brand new dining set, but if you are young and broke like us, then you know that's not realistic.

But thank god for Craigslist. I've taken to browsing my local craigslist just for the heck of it... and sometimes I get great ideas. I thought I'd share this one with you.

See gorgeous inspiration photo:

(where is this from? Please let me know).

See those striped chairs? They are so fabulous. If you read my blog, you know that I love the mix of modern and traditional, and these chairs are a great example.

On the Orange County craigslist, I found this table and chair set:

Sure, you may think this set is pretty awful, but I see past the 1993 office conference room vibe they currently have.

I think they have great modern lines and the two cushions would be perfect for upholstering in a navy striped fabric. I would try and sand the wood down to see if it's stain-able, and stain the wood to match the inspiration photo. If that's not possible, then you could always paint the wood a nice almost-black brown color. I've found a great one from Valspar:

Fired Earth - Valspar 6011-1

The closest fabric I found was this Winston Outdoor Domino fabric from Calico Corners (It's a bit pricey for me, but I didn't search too hard):

The entire set on Craigslist is only $60, I'd probably try to bring it down to $50. I wouldn't use the table, just the chairs... but the table could always be painted white and used as a craft table.

Maybe I can convince my husband to let me get them (fat chance)? He complains that the current dining chairs we have now are too uncomfortable....

On a side note, I didn't get the Craigslist find that I wrote about on Friday... I am still in communication with the seller but not sure if I'll go for it.

Happy Weekend!

I'm starting off the weekend on a high note, despite the tiny sore throat/allergies I'm fighting. Last night the husb and I went to a local Alum party for OU and had a blast. Met some great people, reminisced about Norman bars and food and classrooms, talked about how much we all miss it.

I'll be spending the weekend.......

- Drinking hot tea (it makes my throat feel better)

- In San Diego for a day trip

- Purchasing a major Craigslist score, which leaves me obsessing over Little Green Notebook's bedroom:

You can see more of it here.

- And of course... house cleaning. :-/

Happy weekend to you all!

Well... this has never happened before.

On Sunday I posted the Ampersand winner, and she has yet to collect her prize?

I even contacted her on her own blog to let her know she won, but still - nothing.

...if you are out there, please email me to collect your prize. If I don't hear from you by Sunday, I'm going re-draw.

Weird, huh?

*I hate to ask everyone to put their emails in the giveaway comments due to security reasons, but maybe in the future I may have to do that?

UPDATE: Yayyy she's okay! She contacted me last night . CONGRATS again capo!!!

Duvet: A Love Story

Do you remember when I posted about flickr gal ellybeth? Well ever since discovering her page, I've been obsessing over her duvet cover, seen here:

and here:

and the reverse side here...

Yup, I'm totally smitten. After a couple weeks of thinking about the duvet (yes I'm serious), I finally buckled down and decided to ask her about it.

Turns out it's by Jonathan Adlar and still available!! I'll ignore the fact that she got it at Marshall's for $14... because the least expensive I've found it is on Jonathan's site for $75. Yes, that is pricey for a duvet. But it has reversible sides and would look fantastic in our dark gray room with all white sheets.

Someone has a birthday coming up..... oh yeah, that's me! :D

Grow

After seeing this image via oh, hello friend, I now want to grow my hair out again....

Even though my hair is quite a bit curlier than hers..... hmmm...

Saturday Night Date

The husband and I have been doing something new lately: having our date nights at home. In the past we've always gone out one night during the weekend together (usually Saturday), but due to some budget restraints we've been cooking at home more. I have to admit, I really enjoy it!

The most fun part about it? We always cook something different.

Husband's Date Night Meal:

What can I say.... I married a steak and potatoes guy.

My Date Night Dinner:

Shrimp marinated in cilantro, olive oil, lime juice, garlic and hot sauce. The couscous salad has black beans, Rotel (tomatoes & green chilis), more cilantro, more lime juice and more hot sauce. For not following a recipe, it turned out REALLY good!!

The great thing about cooking at home = tons of leftovers. I had the couscous salad again for lunch today, and added some Feta cheese on top to mix it up. It was delish.

You can see how my husband and I are so different just by looking at our meals. Although we have many important things in common, our day to day likes and dislikes couldn't be anymore different. It keeps things interesting!

Etsy Store: New Items

I listed new items in the Etsy store today!

One of my personal favorites is this cloth baby book that I found at the Rose Bowl Flea Market:

Sure, it's adorable as a book... but open your imagination and think of all the things it could be!

You could cut out one of the pages and sew it onto a white linen pillow to place on your rocker...

Or my personal diy favorite....

Cut out two corresponding pages, put them in matted frames and hang as art!

Can't you just see this little sleeping kitten and baby hung as art above a crib?

If you are like me and don't have a nursery in your near future, check out the other items I've listed today:

Ampersand Pillow WINNER!

Thank you everyone for entering the Ampersand Pillow giveaway from Etsy seller PetitCoterie.

The winner is......

Here are your random numbers:

capo bella's comment was:

"<3 luv lovethe & pillow

When my husband disagrees with me on something he always says "And...." It drives me crazy but I love it because I have to be up on my game. I would love to put it on my bed but fear I would smother him with it. LOL. But I am trying to decorate a living room and it is a great inspirational piece.

Pick me, choose me!!!!"

Her comment is hilarious, isn't it?

Congrats to capo bella!! Please email me for details (brynalexandra at gmail).

Thanks again to everyone who entered.

** On a side note, does anyone know of an easier way to pick winners? Currently I use random.org; it picks a number and then I count all the way down until I hit the number. I do this twice so I make sure I don't miscount and the right winner is picked. Is there any easier way than counting the comments? Please let me know, thank you! **

3 Ways Series: Desk Series

Introducing... the 3 Ways Series! No this is not about a Ménage à trois, get your mind out of the gutter :)

Think back to lazy afternoons filled with a cup of coffee and a Cottage Living; weren't those the days? I'm sure you remember the series where Cottage Living took a functional room or space and showed you four different styles to make the space your own. I loved that series. In fact, I do believe it was my favorite section of the magazine.

So then I thought - hey, why not pay homage to our late Cottage Living and do something similar? One of my favorite features in this master bedroom room, from another dear fallen friend Domino Mag, is the console/desk area under the TV.

I was imaging in my head how to do something similar myself (but not actually for our home..). And voila, 3 Ways Series was born!

I've created three desk collections with different decor themes: Traditional, Modern and Eclectic. Each collection is designed with the desk space in the inspiration photo in mind. I believe with the advances with modern technology, offices in the home are going to become obsolete. With online bill pay, laptops, wireless printers, etc all you really need now is a desk, chair and a few little accessories.

desk: Home Decorators
chair: Wisteria
lamp: bizchair.com
shade: Lamps Plus
dish: eBay
jars: Target.com

desk: Crate & Barrel
chair: seatingzone.com
lamp: bellacor.com
thesaurus: seejanework.com
vase: Ikea
trashcan: World Market

desk: woodlandcreekfurniture.com
chair: Ballard Designs
lamp: Target.com
vases: jamailigarden.com
lucite tray: CB2
domino box: Wisteria

I hope to do this little design series often. If you have an inspiration room request, please feel free to send them my way to brynalexandra at gmail dot com.

New Series :)

A new little series is in the works for the blog. It's design related and I plan to introduce it tomorrow. It was inspired by my dearly missed favorite mag, Cottage Living.

A little hint - it involves this room inspiration:

My Mother-in-Law's Question

So this weekend at the in-law's house my MIL asked me a question she said she gets a lot from her friends who don't understand the blog world. They ask,

"why spend so much time looking into other people's lives?"

I gave her the obvious answer - isn't all entertainment, save the nature channel, about looking into other people's lives? Take it a bit further - isn't all human interaction about looking into other people's lives? Blogging really is just another outlet to do it.

But, the reason I personally do it is because of the inspiration I get for my own life. For instance, once in a while I stumble upon women who completely and utterly inspire me. Okay, I'll admit it, they make me want to be them. But I have to quickly stop those jealousy feelings because I love my life and I love being me, so I just stick to inspiration.

There are so many women who inspire me on a daily basis and you can find most of them via my blog list. What initiated this post was to share another woman that I stumbled upon who is completely inspiring. I don't think she even has a blog (if she does - where is it?!). I found her via Darling Dexter.

ellybeth (via Flickr)

She's everything I love and hope to be: a mother, a sewer, a thrifter, a decorator. Here are some of my favorite images...

She inspires me to....

- have a completely clutter free bedroom
- dress cooler
- enjoy dinner with the husband rather than just eating quickly while watching tv
- sew more

That last picture is her sewing room (!!!) Oh what I would give to have a huge room like that for all my hobbies.

Some highlights include...

- brand new wooden steak knife set from the 60's or 70's
- a cotton baby book
- vintage floral prints

- lots of milk glass and silver

I also have an amazing giveaway coming soon - so there will be a lot of exciting things on the blog this week!

I have a question for you.

I'm spending Easter morning at the Rose Bowl flea market this weekend, I can't wait! I can't believe it's been a month already.

I plan on looking for some great stuff for my new Etsy shop. Since they have just about everything at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, I thought I'd take this opportunity to ask.....

Do you have any requests for vintage/antique items that you'd like to see in my Etsy store?

confession: I don't make the bed.

Today's post is inspired (okay borrowed) from one of my favorite blogs, Door Sixteen. You must go check out her post here. In honor of her sharing beautiful, messy beds I thought I'd share my dirty little secret - my husband and I never ever make the bed.

See - here's the thing. I have time in the morning. I could easily make the bed every morning. But I choose not to. There is just something about climbing into an unmade bed and snuggling up with a poofy, casual duvet that hasn't been smoothed out. I love it, it really is one of my favorite parts of the day.

I do think there is an art to the unmade bed, though. Here are my rules:
  1. NO top sheet. Our bed has a feather bed, fitted sheet and duvet and pillows. That's it.
  2. Big, fluffy comforter to put in your duvet cover. The fluffier, the better.
  3. Duvet cover with no pattern. I live by "K.I.S.S." (Keep It Simple Stupid)
  4. Six, yes six, pillows but no throw pillows. We don't keep any pillows on our bed that would have to be thrown to the ground at night. What's the point? We each have three pillows per side that we sleep with. The back one lies straight up against the wood headboard, and the other two we arrange per our comfort level.
One thing I've noticed that makes an unmade bed look amazing is a dark, fitted sheet with a light duvet cover. I just discovered this this week, actually. Our white fitted sheets were not quite dry yet so I put on a navy blue fitted sheet with our white duvet and white pillow cases. I really love the look - it makes the bed put together but not matchy-matchy.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of our unmade bed for this post, but I think I may have to take some in the near future :)

Head on over to Door Sixteen for her unmade bed pics, and here are some great ones I've found:

{ all images from Domino }

Do you want your own messy bed? Here are some picks that I think would make the perfect messy bed:

{ simple four post bed, fluffy down comforter, dark fitted sheet with light pillow cases, light blue duvet cover, bright+neutral throw for chilly nights }

update: I had a couple people inquired about my no top sheet business. I used to be like you, horrified by the idea... I always grew up with a top sheet, why would one sleep without it?! But for some reason, I think it was a really hot night, my husband and I took off the top sheet and never went back. If you use a duvet cover, a top sheet is really unnecessary. Every laundry day, we wash the fitted sheet, the duvet cover and all the pillow cases. When I get hot, I stick my legs out of the comforter, and so does my husband. We never really get cold, because we live in California. During the summer I replace our down feather comforter with a lighter comforter. The whole thing works really well, and makes our unmade bed a little less messy looking!

There is one thing I will never understand re: sleeping - people who wear the same pajamas multiple nights in a row. Ick!! I know you are not running a marathon in your pajamas, but still. I'm a new t-shirt and boxers/night type of girl.
