I got my new flat iron, and overall I'm happy with the products I purchased! Friday night I was anxious to use it, so I took a shower, blew dry my hair and then flat ironed it.
It didn't turn out as great as when my hair stylist does it (obviously), but I was happy with the process and products. The brush made things go by pretty fast, it really gripped my crazy hair. I was able to get my hair dry in about 20-30 minutes and my hair flattened in about 20 minutes. YES people that is how long it takes my hair to get straight! Early January I'm going to get my hair relaxed, so it should speed up the process.
My only disappointment is that my hair will never look authentically straight, but what can I say. I was born with curly hair!
Here is a picture I snapped on Saturday:
Although it takes a while to do, it's so so easy after that initial long process and it's still good to go today (Monday)!
Let me know if you guys have any questions about the products or process!

You look great!
ReplyDeleteI hate to tell you this, but I would advise against getting your hair relaxed. It's incredibly damaging. See, once I got a perm--so that I could have long curly hair!--but then it was growing out all crazy, so I got the curly part relaxed...and had split ends and frizz for months until I finally gave up and chopped it all off.
Just thought I'd put that out there. Plus I think you are beautiful as is.

It looks great! I have very kinky hair too and although I do wear it curly sometimes, a majority of the time I straighten it (you always want what you don't have, right?).
ReplyDeleteAlthough it takes me a while (about 45 minutes - but I have long hair), I put Bedhead straightening serum in my hair, brush it out wet, and dry it in sections using a hair dryer with a comb attached (you can usually pick these dryers up at Marshall's or TJ Maxx). I then use Kenra Platinum Silking mist on my hair and straighten it using my chi.
The Silking mist is my saving grace - introduced to by my stylist, it's pretty expensive at $17 a bottle. But it protects your hair, smells great, and takes out a ton of the frizz. It is a MUST HAVE for me! It does go a long way - I usually go through a bottle every 2 or 3 months. I would def have to recommend you try it. My hair will usually last 3 days using dry shampoo...and depending on the weather. :)
Good luck!
It looks cute, Bryn! Sounds like a lot of work, but the results turned out great!
ReplyDeleteI'll trade you some of my board-straight hair for some curl?!? Isn't funny how we all long for the other's hair...
ReplyDeletegosh you look so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI too have curly hair...but I love a fresh blow-dry and flat-ironed look.
I'd love to also know what products you used. Shampoo/conditioner/any styling aids. In my experience that also influences the final result. And I'm still shopping for the right mix.
Merry Christmas!

love it! it looks so good! it is funny how you always want what you don't have. a few years ago i got a "wave" put in my hair. I forget the actual name. It wasn't a perm, it just made my hair naturally wavy. I went to school with a girl that would get her hair relaxed from time to time and it didn't ever damage her hair. I guess the main thing is to get someone who really knows what they are doing and whom you trust.
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks great both ways.
ReplyDeletehaving stick straight hair isn't exactly the bees knees. I could spend hours frying my hair in order for it to hold a curl for more than a minute.
My response to relaxing... It actually doesn't damage my hair, I usually relax my hair at least once a year and it really helps. I think it actually makes it LESS frizzy!
ReplyDeleteBut let me note that I don't color my hair at all so that may make a difference.
Sigh..the grass is always greener. I would die for some curl in my hair, because it's stick straight!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Sounds like we have similar hair, so I understand the time commitment involved in straightening--but as you said, once it's done, it's much easier to keep working with!
ReplyDeleteI saw my stylist about two weeks ago and coincidentally we talked about the chemistry involved in both perming and relaxing one's hair; I won't bore you with the details, but my guess regarding Anon.'s comment is that combination of perming, then relaxing was what was detrimental.
I'm so curious about dry shampoo. I don't really get it. Please let us know if you find a product that you would recommend! :)
OHHH!! I like it!! I own a flat iron and can only use it on my bangs!! I need a serious flat iron tutorial!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the way it came out! I like that it has a bit of wave to it. I prefer that to a pin straight look, but that's just me.
ReplyDeleteI used a flat iron for many, many, many years. But after getting yelled at many times at the hair salon I finally just started blowing it out. I haven't used a flat iron in over 2 years now and I love the look.
Although I think you look gorgeous in the picture of you here, I think it's too bad that you would get your hair relaxed. I think your curls are gorgeous and they look so pretty as well! If you get it relaxed, do you still have the option to wear it curly if you so choose?

I would highly recommend a blowdryer with a comb attachment. It saves SO MUCH time. I actually get mine from Target. I typically use this and my Chi. I've tried just about every flat iron on the market, and the Chi is the best product I've used.

ReplyDeleteI use a Chi flat iron and I won't ever use another product. I've used almost every flat iron on the market and the Chi is the best I've come across.
It looks great! I think it looks straight! I like that it is curled under!
ReplyDeleteFrom one natural curly hair girl to the next....I feel your pain!!!!
Looks nice - your lucky only 20mins to falt iron your hair! My hair takes 1 hour + I have super curly hair and its really long. I use the Jilbere flatiron (it gets super hot and make my nice and sleek) I've tired alot of Flat Irons - pricey and cheap and the Jilbere is the only one that really works
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty and I love your new site.
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a wonderfully merry Christmas.
We'll have to talk because there's a good chance I may be moving to LA in July.
Your hair looks great! A few tips from a late-in-life (hormones) curly girl: I wash my hair in the evening, add my product and let air dry (less heat damage) then I flat iron in the morning. I can usually go every other day without washing my hair and just touch up with the flat iron. Paul Mitchell "The Conditioner" works for my thick course hair and it is not sticky or crunchy at all. I try to tell everyone about "The Conditioner" because I have tried every product under the sun, cheap to expensive, and this has been the best product I have ever used-even when I do wear it curly. I just scrunch and go.
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! But I get what you mean regarding the 'authentic look'. You should try the Karmin Titanium Straightener, that really gave me the flawless, natural look of straightened hair even though I have quite a bit of curls. It really helps to try out the different temperatures to see what works best for you, and then try different styling products as well.
ReplyDeleteI love it, Bryn!! It's so long, now - wow! I've been straightening mine too, and am considering a Brazilian Keratin Treatment - ever heard of it??
ReplyDeleteWhat is the process exactly? Can you offer a step by step? I have very thick, naturally wavy/curly hair and would love to wear it straight once in a while.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!
Why is it that curly-headed girls want straight hair and board-straight hair girls--like me--would love cute, curly hair like yours? Funny, huh? I think your hair looks adorable curly or straight and now you can have 2 totally different looks. Yay for you!
ReplyDeleteYour hair has great volume when you straighten it because it's curly! Don't worry about getting it stick-straight; it looks way better with a little bit of a wave.
ReplyDeleteYou are beautiful by the way and I love your blog. I am inspired by your hard work to break into the interior design field. I wish you great success!
Oh I love your curly hair. Don't fight it. (You look great with straight too but Im jealous of your curls)
ReplyDeleteLooks great! :-)
ReplyDeleteBtw, could you do some posts about Weight Watchers? I know it worked for you and I'm interested in learning. Thanks!
I totally missed this post - Bryn! Your hair looks great. I straighten my curly hair, too, but I don't have really kinky curls. What I have is a big wavy, frizzy mop of a hairdo. Thank goodness for straighteners!
ReplyDeleteGreat look! AND I meant to mention to you that I am in love w/ my Marc Jacob skinny leg jeans...well priced too!

ReplyDeleteI too have crazy thick curly hair and I decided to grow it out, well long story short i had to cut it because it got so dry and brittle. It's still really dry and nothing seems to work. Do you have any advice on what I could do? Also, where and what kind of relaxer do you get on your hair. Is it done at a salon or do it buy something over the counter. Any advice in general on what to do and how to get my hair healthy again would be soo greatly appreciated!!!
