Can you please help me?
See, I'm planning a teenie tiny little project in our home which involves fitting a piece of glass on top of a table. Unfortunately, I don't really have anyone handy in my life so I'm a bit clueless as how to actually find the glass and have the said glass cut to fit the table top.
I'm hoping I can go to Lowe's or Home Depot and they can provide this service? Is it expensive? Maybe plexiglass could be a good alternative?
Can anyone out shine any light onto this? If so, I'll promise to share what I have up my sleeve (even though it's not too exciting), and it may even be featured on another blog ;)
UPDATE - WOW. Again, my readers know how to deliver! Thank you so much for all the tips! I found two glass companies locally so I'm going to price them out. I may also check Lowe's. But I'll start here.
Thanks again!!!!!

Lowe's and Home Depot don't offer glass cutting services, but Ace Hardware does. I don't think they charge for this service (unless you buy the glass elsewhere). I think there might also be little tools that are supposed to cut glass, but I was hesitant to try those. Good luck! Can't wait to see what you're up to!
ReplyDeleteDepending on how big a piece you need, I would try the hardware store or a local art supply store. I'm not sure how expensive it is, but keep in mind that plexiglass scratches easier and is usually a bit more expensive than glass. :)
ReplyDeleteusually lowes and those places only do plexi glass. Look for a place that either does windsheilds or house windows. They usually offer glass cutting services or can recommend a place! :)
ReplyDeletehope this helps!
Lowes and HD don't sell glass. Look in a phone book under glass and you'll find local places that can cut it to fit. What shape do you need? If its square or round, you can just give them the measurements. If you need another shape, make a template out of cardboard and take that to the glass place.
ReplyDeleteGreat question! I have a similar project, but also don't have a clue and hope that Home Depot will do it for me (without being expensive).
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what people say!
I've always heard that you could have a piece of glass cut for a tabletop, etc. by a glass worker who does anything from windows to cars. I'd google glass in you area and just start calling. For example, a local business like this: http://www.cutrateglass.com/
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
My mom used to get glass cut at a local glass & mirror store all the time, and I believe it was pretty inexpensive - just give them the measurements, and if needed, trace it out. I just googled this as well, and it looks like Home Depot and Lowes-type places can do it as well. Can't wait to see what you're doing!
ReplyDeleteLowes and Home Depot does sell and cut glass, at least they did in CO when the glass in our garage door broke. I remember thinking they were really inexpensive, but they didn't sell large enough pieces for my garage door (somewhere around 4'x2'). So depending on what size you need, you might have to call a glass company.
ReplyDeletei went recently to an automobile glass place. my coffee table is 35" square and it cost $65. the glass is 1/4 in. thick. it looks great.
ReplyDeleteWhen were selling our house, we needed to replace some mirrors and went to a local glass and mirror store and they cut the mirror while we were waiting and it was about $15. I just looked them up in the Yellow Pages. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGlass at Lowes is super cheap and they cut it to your specs on the spot -- but it is flimsy, thin and the edges are not finished. I would go to a glass shop. It will cost $20-$40 for a table top, but they round the edges and it will be at least a 1/4" thick (the thinnest you should go).
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your project!

I recommend a place that specializes in glass and mirror. They know what they're doing!!

If you need circular glass...Pier 1 sells glass tops in several sizes
ReplyDeleteI second the automotive glass place...I can't think of a dedicated glass and mirror store in my area so I would head there...definitely intrigued now!
ReplyDeleteI have used Lowes on a number of occassions to have glass cut. The usually don't have huge pieces so the only time I ran into a problem was trying to get a piece for a sofa table (table too long!). Good luck!
ReplyDeletePlexi-glass is really easy to cut. I know my husband has scored it with a utility knife and then just snapped it apart. The only down-side is that is doesn't feel like real glass, which may bother some people (especially if it's for something like a desk top).
ReplyDeleteWe had a piece for our tabletop made at a local glass place. It was really quick and easy. We just called with measurements and went and picked it up. They had lots of thickness and edge options. For a large table, it was about $150 but that could have been high because I did not price it out at multiple place.
ReplyDeleteYou've gotten a lot of good recs so I'll just chime in too - I used to work at a glass place and we did this for customers all the time.
ReplyDeleteI'm late on this one, but like others have said a local glass place should be able to help!
ReplyDeleteI'm just excited to see what you are doing.
