Organization 2009
One of my major New Years Resolutions is to organization - major organization. I'm talking top to bottom, east to west, office to bathroom cabinets type of organization. No corner will be unturned. It's going to be a huge hurdle... I don't expect to be finished until summer time. However, it's much needed in the D family household.
Here are some key objectives for my re-org....
A Place for Everything and Everything in it's Place.
This saying has been around since 1827 (seriously, I googled it), and it's probably one of the best motto's around. Unfortunately, I've never lived by it. But I've spent too many mornings, evenings and weekends tearing the house apart looking for a pair of scissors, a cd, a roll of tape, an ipod. There is no excuse for that. Plus, I've learned, it actually saves money. No need to go out and buy 3 more rolls of tape if you know you already have 3 sitting at home, in it's place.
Slowly, Room by Room.
I'm going to tackle this job room by room. I've actually gotten a head start on the office - I cleaned out everything, threw away what we didn't use/need, and designated "stations". In the office, I have a drawer just for our checks. I have a cabinet just for paper goods. I have another cabinet just for computer/electronic components. I plan on designating each room a specific purpose - one guest room will be for arts/crafts, the other for decor and luggage.
What Goes In, Must Go Out.
I plan on getting rid of everything we don't actively use. I guess you could say there is a little hippie living inside of me who is disgusted by excess. That hippie wants to come out so badly. I especially am going to use this idea with our clothing - if we don't love it and actively wear it, out it goes. 2009 will be all about living simply.
So what does this mean for you, the Newlywedism reader? Well, I am going to take you along on my organizational journey. I'm going to snap pictures of the before (you will be shocked) and of course, the after. I am also planning on setting up an Etsy shop to hopefully make some money off the items we don't need anymore - as they say, 'One man's trash is another man's treasure'. So needless to say, stick around! :D

Oooh, good resolution, Bryn! Keep us posted on everything... and hopefully this won't get in the way of your new running habit from 2008. I like that one too.
ReplyDeleteI could have wrote this post myself! Declutter/Downsize/Organize - that's my 2009 goal. We'll to at it together :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a woman after my own heart. This is also my 2009 goal, going room to room and clearing and decluttering.
ReplyDeleteHave you read "Getting a life"? I just read it this weekend, at my husband's urging. It's really made me re-think my own impulse to buy things all the time, only to have them wind up gathering dust or in a closet cluttering everything up. It's also a great book about cutting back to save money.... =) Good luck! Cannot wait to see how it goes.
I can't wait to join you on your journey! We need to do this so badly! Especially hard to get rid of the old with all of the new wedding gifts still rolling in!
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you. Luck for me I started last month, and I to want to keep it going. I am no where near done with 4 people in a house and all rooms packed with things. Thanks for the motivation to finish.
ReplyDeleteI too can't wait to see what you do! I have tried organizing before, and have even devised various "stations" for things in our office, but my hubby never seems to put things where they go. Is your on board? Will he be working with you on the organization?
ReplyDeleteI read a novel a couple of years ago where the main character would do a yearly de-cluttering by "shopping" in her home. If it wasn't something she would buy then, she got rid of it. I think its a cool concept, but I've never been able to go through with it myself.
We need to all have organization on the blogs. Take before picks for each room we start, and afters to...Its hard for some! I need to get my sister some "help".
ReplyDeleteCan't wait Bryn, I need some major inspiration in this department.
ReplyDeleteI can not survive without being organized - i have 3 kids and a very busy husband! I live by the motto about everything having a place! I can't wait to see what you do.

ReplyDeleteA fine resolution! We must have been bitten by the same bug. I just went crazy on The Container Store site buying kitchen organizers. The pantry in particular has been driving me insane! (Substitute your "buying rolls of tape" example for "buying cans of cooking spray" and you have our house. DH just bought a third can of Pam today... grr!)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your ideas. My house is definitely in need of some better organization!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking last night how my plan for '09 is to streamline things to live more simply. Have you seen the post on hyperhomemaker about the same topic? I can't wait to see what you do! I hope it will get me working!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the tid-bit about the "everything in its place", I make my students memorize that saying.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to seeing your progress! God this is something I need to do too. Great idea on the Etsy store!
ReplyDeleteLOL Bryn! I think I totally C&Pd this post without knowing it into my post for tomorrow. You go you organiziation queen! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat resolution! I'm looking forward to seeing your tips!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your progress. Organizing is one of my goal for 2009, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! I too plan on tackling major organizing in 2009, but I love that you broke down your plans into "steps." I can't wait to see how it goes!
