So, I've been thinking about doing a inexpensive fix-it in our Family room. I've disliked this room for a while, it's a little too "country/traditional" for my taste now. Since I can't change the rug and couch ($$) I've focused in on the other items. I've already gotten rid of half the sectional and re-painted/re-hung the mirror. Both of these improvements have been worth it.
My next idea is to paint the tv stand and the side table gray. I got the idea from the fab Eddie Ross, I just love his gray chairs.
Luckily, there is some gray in the rug. I also want to replace the legs on the tv stand to something a little more sleek, and perhaps the hardware too.
What do you think?
Repaint them? Or think of another (inexpensive) option?

I kinda like it black, but I would have to see it in gray to really know...is anyone good at photoshop?
ReplyDeleteAlso, you are creative and handy right :)? What about adding something to the fireplace, like some larger molding to make it stand out more, fireplaces are great so make it a focal point. Its not expensive, you can have wood cut at Home Depot and get a can of paint.
Love the mirror over the fireplace too, but what if you hung it the other way? Also possibly adding some sconces like Eddies. OR is putting the tv above the fireplace an option?? Then I would move the couch to the center of the room and put a sofa table behind it with two end tables on either side.
Also, I would pull the rug away from the fireplace so the couch fits on the whole rug.
Ok, this is already too long, I'm rambling :) Love your house BTW, so beautiful! I'm jealous of all your space, my apartment is so tiny!
I love the gray chairs in the ER photo but I don't think painting those pieces gray will have the desired impact. If anything, it will make it look more country, not less.
ReplyDeleteWhat about repainting and rearranging the furniture? Doesn't get much cheaper than that.
I think the tv and the mirror are competing with each other and making the room look unbalanced. What about putting the tv over the fireplace and adding some flanking sconces or artwork?
You could turn the rug the other way so there is more room on each side of it. And the couch could float in the middle of the room rather than being pushed against the wall.
Good luck no matter what you do - Im sure you'll come up with something great.
I have to agree with lindsb about making your fire place more of a focal point. Personally here is what I would do in this room (since you asked, LOL!):
ReplyDelete1. Paint the walls, not the furniture gray. Paint is a cheap way to make a big statement, and I love the gray in Eddie's living room (your inspiration).
2. Find a fireplace mantle at a yard sale, flea market or salvage shop. Paint it to match your molding in the room and mount it directly obove your fireplace. If you can't find one purchase a floating shelf from Target and paint it for the same concept.
3. Rearrange the furniture (cheap & easy).
4. I picture the room once the walls are grey and the mantle up with tons of glass/crystal candle sticks in various designs/heights grouped together on your mantle (find these at goodwill) with tall white taper candles. Red velvet throw pillows on the couch and crisp white sheers on the windows(find these at crate & barrel). Also an ottoman that can double as a coffee table or extra seating.
Good luck!!
